FINALLY!?
« on: June 22, 2020, 10:25:11 PM »
No more mac OS X(10) 10... and it won't even be XI 11, which is the only thing worse I can imagine! :wallbash:
Big Sur will simply be macOS 11:thumbup:

It will be interesting to see if Big Sur allows the user to have the same interface as Catalina. For example, Catalina users have the option to either use dark mode or continue as in previous OSs. Also, Mail users can use the Classic view if they prefer.

I hope that Apple gives us this flexibility. I could adapt to a different interface, but my better half gets very upset about any changes. Time will tell.

I doubt either one of us are in the 'demographic' target. Looking through the "details" at the above link doesn't show much of interest to me. However, I did glean a bit of hope seeing this:
Quote
The menu bar is now taller and more translucent, allowing your desktop picture to extend from edge to edge. Words lighten or darken based on the color of your desktop picture. And pull-down menus are larger, with more space between the lines to make everything easier to read.

The mini-page preview of a Safari tab could be useful. :dntknw:

iOS has Dark Mode as an Option with or without automatic activation. The only strategic plan I see is to make the Mac as similar to iOS as possible. So, if it's in iOS already, it will likely/hopefully stay in the real OS.

I suppose making all the OS's use the same resources will make things easier for devs. Frankly, making apps useful for tiny screens on all iPhones is wasted energy when using even an iPad! I have yet to hear of anything useful for a watch-sized screen.

Another question is the length of time that OS 11 will work with Intel processors. When Apple switched from Power PC to Intel, Rosetta supported the former for a period of time but eventually, it became necessary to buy an Intel Mac. The same will probably be true with the switch to ARM processors, although it will probably take a few years. Planned obsolescence?... :dntknw:

Jon, Jon, jon... It's only money! You can't take it with you! Don't you care for all the Apple employees who will still be around when you are gone? Oh for the shame! :p :blush-anim-cl:

I know, it's true that money isn't everything. But they won't date you if you don't have any.

Well, there are lots of previews on YouTube as of today, so you can have a look at it with developers or watch Apple's own intros.

Re: Dark mode - yes, it's an option, same as before.

All the app icons now look like the iOS icons, and things have rounded corners. Funny - someone on the GeneratePress (Wordpress theme I use) FB group today was claiming that "rounded corners are coming back!" A few disputed this, but maybe he had a line on what Apple was up to. ;)

Yes, all things mobile will soon appear on a Mac in front of you. If you still use a mouse, be especially careful as the new ones will be built to slip out of your hand at the most inopportune times; over water, in a hang-glider, over wet concrete, etc. Don't be surprised when the new light-weight Macs get moved to other convenient places in your house... and you will forget where it is! :wallbash: Fortunately, 'Find-My-Mac' still works on your iPhone... assuming you know where that is!

For those who use Windows on their Macs:   Rosetta lacks support for x86 machine virtualization, Boot Camp not an Apple silicon option

This is not good news for developers, gamers...etc. Or me (not that I'll be in the market for a new Mac any time soon, since both of mine are new in the last 6 months!) :(

I wonder if Apple has any stats on the number of Mac users who also run Windows - either via BootCamp or via virtualization?

Remember that Big Sur is only in testing. Many changes can occur between now and when it is finally released.

I’ll take a look. I also want to disable automatic OS updates. Got work to do ‘round the house first. :multitask:
