iPad Pro Lightning Port
« on: November 25, 2020, 11:28:59 AM »
So, it appears that the lightning port on my 2016 iPad Pro is kaput. All of a sudden I cannot plug in the charging cable. A visual inspection shows that the contacts inside have shifted and are blocking the cable insertion. So it looks like the port needs to be replaced. Anyone have this happen to their iPad? And any recommendations or experience with the various repair services that are available? Prices seem to be all over the place.

TIA!

Chris

We have had ports entirely yanked out of iPads and other devices; we get them fixed if there is warranty but probably don't if there isn't!

Did you contact that place in Olathe?

There is instructions about this at: https://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPad_Pro_9.7

Video here:

The video says the port is "almost impossible to replace!"

Thanks John. Update: Have a friend down the road who is an ace guitar builder and repairman. He has one of those magnifying LED visors, and took a look at it. What happened was that the end of the Lightning cable separated inside, so it was blocking the port. He was able to carefully remove it with a dental tool, what broke off looks like a mini-staple. All is back to normal, all it cost was a 4-pack of his favorite Vermont ale, Switchback!

Glad it worked out Chris!  We have to pull a lot of audio mini-jacks out of the old style sound ports on Chromebooks and other Laptops!  If you ever pull a tip apart you'll see that it was purely lucky that it ever held together at all the metal is as thin as a piece of paper! Smaller isn't really better!
