Lately, I have been receiving a lot of spam email (first time in awhile). I tried setting rules to delete messages from the sender's address, but these dirtbags just switch them. I noticed, however, that the subject lines invariably connected words either with an underline dash or a tilde, probably an attempt to fool junk mail filters. Consequently, I set up rules to delete messages that either had ~ or _ in the subject line. Hopefully, that did the trick because I have not received any of this spam since.

This definitely works. As a precaution against deleting a legitimate email, I changed the rule to have these suspected spams moved to Trash. Immediately after I did this, I downloaded new emails and, lo and behold, a spam email showed up in Trash! Naturally, I deleted it.

Gone are the days you could just write return to sender on envelope or use them in the cat litter tray!

Xairbusdriver, I don't use any Spam filter... yet. Can you tell me how well it works and why bother? I get about half dozen a day. Most go into my JUNK mailbox. A few get through.  I usually delete those. Just wondering if it's worth it. Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by “worth it”. SpamSieve, is no more trouble to install than any other app. In other words, ‘no trouble’. You simply “train” it by using “option, command, S” to instead of Deleting a message. That’s three keys so maybe you consider that too much effort to be worth not even seeing lots of SPAM?

Remember that simply opening an email can notify the sender that you will open a SPAM message. That makes your addy worth more to those who compile an sell email lists. Why make things easier for them?!

Remember that simply opening an email can notify the sender that you will open a SPAM message.

In Mail, you can delete a spam message without opening it. Instead of opening it, Control-click it and select Delete from the contextual menu. That moves it to the Trash folder. You can then go to Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items or go to the Trash folder itself and vaporize the offending message by repeating the process. You'll never see what was in that email.

That's true and you can usually tell/smell by just the 'Preview'. However, many people (especially lazy ones like me) simply open all emails and then decide if it's SPAM. By then, the dirty work has been done. Using a good anti-SPAM app does the 'control-click-select-delete-move-to-trash' steps automagically as well as automatically deleting them on your own schedule. I would suggest looking at the SPAM folder occasionally to assure no false-positives got caught... before vaporizing.
