I don't use a VPN (my only internet connection is at home via ethernet) so I can't say anything relevant, but those who do might wish to read
It’s Time to Stop Paying for a VPN

VPN is a Virtual Private Network. It bounces your connections to many different servers so that it becomes difficult, maybe impossible, to trace your browsing back to you.

I use Opera's built in VPN and it is fine except that the my bank has some issues with it sometimes when I try to do some sort of remote transaction! It's free although I think I would pay for it if I used it more!

I've used Surfshark for a while now. No complaints. Not so much with my desktop computer but for streaming with an Nvidia Shield. Just because it's not Spectrum cable's business what I'm watching and how I watch it since I ditched them for TV service.
I also use the app on the phone or iPad if I'm on public wifi outside of home.
I had Nord for a time but it seemed to often drop connections on me.
