iMac G3, OS9.1

There are three major newspapers in Toronto, Ontario. Two of them open with ease. The third causes a freeze if I click on a link and also when I type in the address. Does anyone know why this would happen?  Thinking.gif

Don't buy the one that doesn't open easily! Two papers a day, from the same area, should be sufficient, anyway whistling.gif

Even in the Summer?! I know it gets cold up there, but you should complain to the authorities, if you are having freezes in the middle of the summer! jawdrop.gif

I'm not sure why you would 'click' on the addresses you see in a paper, anyway. Maybe you have been using the computer too much lately! 'Clicking' only works in a browser or in some e-mail. wallbash.gif
BTW, I recently learned that 'clicking' a phone number will not dial the phone, even if I pick up the receiver first! doh.gif

Also, instead of typing on the newspaper, try using regular paper, preferably clean, non-used paper, it will be much easier to read your typing than when using newsprint. blush-anim-cl.gif

I, too, have found from time to time that certain sites freeze my browser (IE 5.1, requiring a force-quit) or even crash my entire OS (9.2.2)!  

If I really need to access the site, I try it in a different browser, more than one if necessary (I use IE 5.1 98% of the time, so  I'll try Netscape 6.2 or Opera), and if neither of them work I fire up my emulated peasea (RealPC running Win98 with IE 5.0).  

Recently I did encounter one site that would not function properly with any of the above, but I was able to boot into OS X (10.1.5) and use Netscape 7, which did work fine.

I have a theory about why this might be (involving the 'bastardized' MS-Java - don't get me started) but as I am not a programmer, I do not know if my theory is well-founded.

Don't hesitate to complain to the webmaster or the corporate entity that owns the site if you can't use their site on your computer.

Some website designers are too peasea-centric or too overworked or too lazy to test their site on any but the most common computers, and consequently don't even know that it doesn't work on many systems.

I have tried it on OE 5.1 and Netscape 4.7  with the same results. I don't want to upgrade Netscape.

Actually, it may be the heat wave we're having. You need to travel more.

I am using Mozila 1.4 and as I was trying 5to access thi site, my browser quit on me.

 Fiona, using Opera 6.02 in OS 10.1.5 I was able to open the page. I'm guessing it's all the javascripting on the page that is bumping into things with your browsers.

Not sure how to work around it so that you can at least contact them and tell them what is happening.

Hope the printed edition is less 'flashy' than the web version! unsure.gif

Anyway, loaded fine on IE 5.1.3, OS 9.1 (with or without javascript enabled). I'd say it may be that their browser sniffer doesn't like what yours is telling it. But the surprising part of it was that they think the Mac has a time/day bug! Looks like they add a day (in seconds) to the expiration date for the cookies they set. Seems like a waste of bandwidth to me.

And they have a  rather large page to send! No telling how long it would take on a dial-up! Takes about 8 seconds on cable! jawdrop.gif Mostly small gif's (not sure about some of the ads, got many of them blocked).

You might try increasing the cache size and even the memory allocated to your browser(s). Your version of NS will miss most of the CSS stuff, certainly the imported parts, no telling what the page(s) would look like in it.

A note to the webmaster might even help. They might tell you why they are doing certain things and what they want from the browser.

Sorry about the earlier post, some say I should stop leaving the cockpit windows open at 30,000 feet...

Aw, that's OK, airbusdriver. I was a little cranky earlier today. Note to self: Do not post late at night and check your grammar before sending. When I read it later on , I could see the humour. Yes, that's how we spell humour. Thanks to all of you for the advice.   biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  Maybe I'll just walk across the street and buy a Globe and Mail at the convenience store.

See if you can read it with JavaScript disabled in IE.

It might not crash that way.

M$ is none to friendly toward anything they didn't 'invent.' They, therefore, tend to hide any reference to 'other' services! upset.gif

To disable javascript (not Java), select "Preferences" in the Edit menu. Then open the "Web Browser" tab. Now on 'Web Content.' The bottom pane has choices for 'Active Content.' "Enable scripting" is M$'s nod to javascript.

BTW, I disable 'ActiveX' since I can't imagine it being Mac friendly, much less Mac usable! wacko.gif

"Java" (the language) is easier to find in the prefs. But it is not the same a javascript which is what some are suggesting may be your problem. However, having it enabled did not cause problems for my set up (IE 5.1.3/OS 9.1).

Sure hope you can get to the papers site. Perhaps you will find some correct spellings there for some common words like color, humor, etc.! taped.gif  Devilish2.gif
