missing site icons
« on: February 24, 2023, 12:15:55 PM »
Safari 16.3.1, MacOS 11.7.4: Safari will reset any lost site icons in History but very few in Bookmarks. There was no issue in previous versions of Safari and this developed only after updating to 16.3.1. Is anyone else seeing this?

I'm not a Safari Bookmarks user so I can't report if things changed with any update. I see only a generic 'world'/'globe' icon in my Bookmarks list. (I'm surprised to even see so many sites/folders in my Bookmarks list! I have no idea who, how or when they were added/created  ) I assume those original site icons are what you are calling 'lost site icons'?

History does show unique icons, but that list only last about a week or seven days (whichever comes first). Frankly, I've never cared for 'icons', especially after file titles lost the 32 character limit and especially tiny icons. :dntknw: They are marginally useful in Safari tabs. I have 42 tabs open right now and only 10 unique icons are visible. On the other hand, not even all the tabs are even visible at one time. Of course, most of this problem is because I don't use "Full Screen" viewing of any app :blush-anim-cl: ; hardly any app I use needs the full width of my 27" monitor.

I'm sure my ramblings have been so helpful! :scram:

Thanks for your "helpful" reply. Fortunately, this is a very minor issue. I have posted the question in Apple Discussions and submitted a bug report to Apple. Theoretically, the Safari 16.3.1 update cured History of not showing site icons but it caused all my bookmarked icons to become generic (globe, in your description). The update also reverted the site icons of pinned tabs to generic, but opening those tabs restored the icons. And, a few bookmarked icons have been restored but not all.

All in all, it's still a mystery...

Here's another not-helpful note: running 16.3 with no icon problems. Guess I might skip .1 and wait for the .2 update.  :)
