Hello! Hi! Howdy! Hello!!
« on: March 15, 2026, 06:06:35 PM »
Hi everyone!  I'm back with a new computer!  I still have my old faithful one but am trying to learn this new one...it's an iMac desktop computer, Apple M4, 24 inch monitor, 16 GB, running Tahoe 26.2, with a hard drive of 245.11 GB.  FANCY!!!   Do you think I know what all that means? Of course not!  Oh, and the key board that came with this iMac is small to me!  Ohhhhhhhh and I have a Magic Wireless Mouse!!!! That's different!

I can actually finally access this site  :yahoo:

But wait... I will still need 'splaining like I'm a 2 year old from another planet or something like that because I know I'll be stumped many times as I get used to this one.

I just wanted to stop in and say HI!  Has anything much changed?  People are still going strong and healthy?  My health concerns seem to have stabilized but that could change at a moment's notice--a peril of aging--but I'm still so glad to be here!
Smiles,
Soon

Welcome BacK, sooz!

Great to hear that you are healthier! :yahoo:

Things are much, much quieter 'round here! People kinda got tired of not having any bakery items from you! :wallbash: Seriously, there's talk of not renewing our hosting this year. Traffic has simply evaporated. You'll have lots of humor to catchup on! :laughhard:

I also got a new iMac a few months ago! Very similar to yours! It is still difficult not having that big 27" screen, however. I'm still not comfortable jumping from Ventura to Tahoe! Last week we had a thunderstorm a bit too close by and the WiFi router died. Things are almost back 100% except I still can't get my wife's MBP to see and use the printer connected to my Mac. I can use her printer but that just gives me something to do and keep me "off the streets!" :nono:

Hi Sooz!

Good to hear from one of the "old timers". Actually, as Jim said, there isn't a lot of traffic here lately. Macs have become so easy to use with few of the problems we faced in the earlier days.

TS is just kind of hanging on, we had talked about pulling the plug but if all it costs is just renewing the server, then there is the possibility of extending our footprint for a little while longer. Seeing you here gives a bit of life to the forum.

Sounds like you have a really nice machine to play with. I'm a few OS versions behind the latest but tackle the changes as they come.

Again, welcome back!

Welcome back, Sooz! I have the same iMac except with 24 GB RAM and 2 TB storage. I also miss the 27-inch monitor (and my wife has not stopped complaining about its loss). Still, there are many positives. There is a learning curve, especially since I went from MacOS 11.7 (Big Sur) directly to Tahoe. Feel free to make any inquiries that need explaining and I will try to respond.

Of course, you should keep my wife's quip in mind. When I told her that I was a perfect idiot, she said "Nobody's perfect."

Thanks for the wonderful welcome back, Jim, Kris and Jon (loved the quip!)!  I think I have too much computer for my needs though.  It's like why do I need an industrial mixer for baking  :cookies:when I really only need one of those hand-held electric mixers...  :thanx:

I thought it came with Pages, but Pages is nowhere to be found so I''ll have to go to the App Store and download it I guess.  I understand it's free.

I'm so used to MSWord--is Word outdated or not free?

Jim, weren't you telling me something about Pages in a past post?

At least I know what I have to do for Time Machine thanks to you-all and past baby-step by baby-step help!

So glad TS is still here!

Yes, you can download Pages for free from the App Store. Don't know about Word.  Lots of free apps available. :-)

You can download Word via App Store (type msword into the search field) but it is a subscription. I tried Pages and didn't like it. Despite my aversion to MS and the subscription requirement, I use Word because I like it and it does what I want. You can also download Word as a standalone and buy it. The "advantage" of the subscription is that you get automatic updates. I don't know if MS still supports updates for its purchase.

Here are two word-processing apps (free) that you might consider:

Growly Write
Libre Office

Since both are free, you risk nothing.

If you absolutely, positively have to have Wurd, go for it. Fortunately, I never had to use it and still cringe when my wife asks me for help with it. It is obviously an app designed by engineers who had run-a-way ideas for functions that would be little used but great for bragging about. :coolio: :WOW:

Pages has never failed to provide everything I've ever wanted as far as text on paper needs. Most complicated use I ever needed was a mini-booklet for our HS class reunion. Letter-sized page folded in half to create a booklet 8" by 5 ½" document. Paragraphs (in two columns) had to bleed from one column to the next and occasionally to the next page. The text also had to flow around a class member picture if we had one (I varied where that image was for each person; left column or right just to keep things from being boring). Included page numbers and two-sided print outs that were collated and needed only folding and stapling. Pages displayed Apple's usual copy and paste/drop methods. Images were easily adjusted if needed (grab/drag a corner).

Pages can also open and save to .docc/docs (or whatever wurd uses now days). I dare you to compare it's "any-where-on-the-page" ease of use with any MS app. And, of course, it's free for any Mac!
