OT... We NEED Rain!
« on: August 13, 2003, 06:26:38 PM »
The jetstream shifted today to from the SW... we have such a bunch of smoke from the fires in westen AB and eastern BC that the sun is a blood red ball in the middle of the day! I don't know HOW those people over there are breathing... I'm finding it hard... stinging eyes, nose, throat... and ashes falling out of the sky.

They need about a solid week or more of rain in that fire zone and it's just not happening... I don't believe I've ever seen it this bad before.

Kinda scary!  jawdrop.gif

I would say you oculd have some of ours, but as long as I'm still delivering mail, I want it to cool me down smile.gif

We have had some pretty intense storms lately. One dumped 1.75 inches in only half an hour!

smile.gif Evening Dreambird,

It is thundering over my head as I post.  Rhode Island has had really tropical humidity and on again off again showers.

Of course, being tied to the Mac by the umbilical cord has helped me ignore most of what is going on in the rest of the world.

i just thought I would stop by and say "Hello", I have to try to locate the links that kelly had posted to get a download of a utility to fix fonts.

I am off to rest after I do that.  I was up until 3AM.  I haven't had a real rest in days.

'Bye for now,

Myrna

QUOTE(giantmike @ Aug 13 2003, 11:37 PM)
We have had some pretty intense storms lately. One dumped 1.75 inches in only half an hour!

That ain't to bad- The stormy weather just broke today- its 90 and 90 (tempurature and humidity)  but last week a town just 10 minutes south of us got 5.3" in an hour.  a stream that usually averages 2-3 ft. deep made it all the way up to 7ft 4in deep right near the end of the storm.  Thankfully no real damage biggrin.gif

DB- we have some farming friend out near you (in the country) and they have suffered from heat from fires actually warming up te area around them- is that happening now?

MrsLop- We've never talked before, but I've enjoyed reading your posts.  BTW you mentioned thunder- we lost a modem 4 yrs. ago to thunder (just a warning)  Good luck with the chemo- and the other problems- my aunt, grandmother, and several good family friends have undergone chemotherapy, and though it did wipe them out, they are just as lively as they ever where (even though one of them now has to limit exposure to the sun do to other medical problems that came before the cancer)

Peace-
Peter

I dunno Peter... it's been uncommonly warm for Calgary this summer, anything from mid-70's to low-90's... mainly in the 80's since the beginning of July. I have never seen the smoke from those areas from previous fires get so thick here in the city.

There's a Map here... if this works. You can zoom out about 3 times to see where Calgary is in relation. The fires are in the Crowsnest Pass, Blairmore and Hillcrest areas...

Myself I love the hot weather! I could just fill up on it with a rotten winter just around the corner... but those fires are worrisome...

Enjoyed reading some of those names on the map (when I  zoomed out a few clicks), DB. LLet's hope the fires don;t last much longer.

Mention of Glacier always brings back a flood of memories of my first of several summers of work there . . . 44 years ago. I've always claimed that it's the most unforgettable geography in the US.

For our TS friends who have (or, even, have not) visited, here's  a great picture gallery . . .

I thought it was just the Brits that always talked about the weather biggrin.gif . On Sunday, Heathrow measured 37.7C, to which everybody said 'so what?'. Then they told us it was 100F, first time it's been measured in the UK since records began in 1659.

At the same time, about 150 miles north in Yorkshire, it was thunderstorms and torrential rain (but nothing like 5.3in in an hour!). We're about halfway between the two. Today (Thursday 8.30am), it's sunny and far less humid. But I'll still take the umbrella  wink.gif

DB, hope they get those fires out soon - Portugal has fires blazing that we're told cover an area the size of the country of Luxembourg. That's not a big country, but it's still a heck of a big area for fires.

DB. Only 90?
I haven't seen/felt below 100 in weeks. Then I'm in lizard territory. <gr>
Everyday there's a fire close by. Whether it's a brush fire engulfing an entire hillside within minutes before the firefighters can get there or a structural stick house turning into ash within mere minutes.
Some kids had a few left over fireworks [of some sort] and daddy allowed them to set them off in the front yard. One of the little tikes let a airborne fire thingie fly astray to their wooden built laundry room tied to their doublewide mobile home. Apparently they ignored it thinking it went out by itself.
Once the fire started, the entire doublewide mobile home was burn down in less than fifteen minutes. The firefighters got there right at the end. All they could do is contain the fire from spreading past the home as the family watched there home and all their belongings go poof.
As I'm typing this, there's two brush fires close by. One (around twenty miles away) is spreading past the 1000 acre mark threatening several homes. The other is 90% curtained thanks the our local fire guys spending all night on top of it.

Even though I have my own hat rack cleared of excess brush etc some twenty feet away from the rack, if the rack caught fire it would be minutes too go poof also.
Thanks to neighborhood watch, I feel a little better while I'm off making money for dog and cat food.
I've come to the conclusion (years ago) during summer/heat season that if the rack went up and I'm around, get the animals out of harms way and the hell with anything else. just material things that can be replaced one way or another.

Thanks for putting up that picture site Dick... smile.gif I especially like the one with the hillside covered with flowers, all the colours of the rainbow!

I "have" been to Glacier... mainly Logan's Pass, spectacular! But I still haven't been to our Waterton Park that borders it to the north.

Highmac... I've seen and heard about the Portugal fires on the CBC news... sad.gif

Otherwise I think we're lucky not to have your level of humidity... must feel like a sauna! It's hit around 100 once or twice here that I can remember since I moved here in 1976. It's a very rare thing here too. But it's a big enough place now that it can do that "rain like crazy in one area while a mile down the road is dry as a bone" thing...

Hey Bill... smile.gif Snuck in on me while I was posting! Yup, only 90's but that "is" rare enough here. Where my family and I used to vacation over in the Okanagan Valley, interior BC, it was over 100 all summer long. *LOL** My Dad and I got along fine, Mom complained and Wendy was, well not around yet and then when she was, she didn't care much as long as there was ice cream... biggrin.gif

Just can't resist saying that when they catch "kids" with any "fire" thingies in the summer like that they should spank the parents! But good!!  mad.gif I suppose they'll figure it out when they grow up and it's "their" place... aaaarrrghh...

Rain? Did you say RAIN?

Well, I'd like to invite you all to the mushroom farm in my backyard.  dry.gif

We've had over 20 inches of rain in August so far and it's only half way through the month.

DB, you can have some of our rain, oh wait!  We're not getting any ourselves.  I hope you get some and wish some for us too.

You all with alot of rain, send some our way. (DB's and Al's)

Been hot here, high humidity and high 80's to low 90 degrees in my area for the past three weeks.  What is bad is the himidity factor adding to the heat causing indexes in the mid 90's and some days upper 90's.

State government just asked the Hawaii public for voluntary water restrictions.  If we don't reduce our water consumption the government will impose mandatory restrictions due to the lack of rain this summer season.

Bill, I feel for ya, bro.   sweatingbullets.gif

I'm shipping clouds, rain, water, wind y'alls way.  Mercy!  we've had rain.  The ditches are FULL.  We tyoically have afternoon showers, but the additional morning showers are keeping us WET.

Texas ought to get some rain before the first of the week.

Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

This year is a complete "switch around" from last year I think! It was cold and rainy here last summer while the east side sweltered if I remember right.

A good downpour to put those fires out would be the ticket... it looks like it's shaping up to be another "very" smokey day here today again.
