Can someone check on this for me? Then tell me what it real

http://forumshawaii.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=31264

Go down to integlspwr's (users ID) post and check out his signature.  Please, don't mind the odd avatars on the way.

It's wierd how the little sig. can tell what your IP addy is, who your ISP is, what type of computer you are on and even what browser you are using.  all with a silly saying to.

IE says it's a .png file, but when downloaded it has a .jpg extension.

This spooked me the first time I saw it.  It still spooks me.  Gonna go back and try it with Safari.

Hi Al,

The browser makes a call to this address for the picture.

code:
http://www.danasoft.com/vipersig.jpg

There must be a script running on the danasoft server that queries the asking machine for the info that appears on the little image. PHP and ImageMagik can do this and create images on the fly.

The info is harmless although it may feel like an invasion. Remember this though, you are the only one seeing your personal info. We each see our own..   It could be being logged on the danasoft site, but I don't see what anyone would get out of it other than the standard info any web server is collecting about "hits".

*grin..I'll steal his image and post it here

see ya,
Diana

Hey!
Believe it or not that is the ISP I work for. Not really sure who posted that.....thought maybe my manager did but he won't own up to it. That forum is based in Hawaii? We are in Ohio....LOL...how weird.

Marie. We all see our own ISPs.

Unless I've misunderstood your statement.

Any server that has SSI (Server Side Include) capabilities enabled can do that with ease. When I worked on a server that had such capabilities, I would set up pages that would do stuff like that just for fun. It's really easy to do, and carries no security risks (for the end user).

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies and the information on what the heck that was.  Interesting enough it says Safari is Mozilla/Netscape.

Todd, that is a very nice picture of your porch, but the thermometer looks broken, it says it's below zero!

It's a chilly 63 here. That aside, if you don't trust anyone, anytime, anyhow and you don't have the time to be clever, just accept. They will know who you are, where you are and what you do.

If it REALLY bothers you, don't vote for people who appoint people like Ashcroft!
