New adventures in xfering apps/data to Ti laptop
« on: August 17, 2003, 05:40:52 PM »
I decided to just copy apps and data via FireWire however ejecting the Ti HD icon failed. So, I shut down the laptop and then I had a disaster since now the Ti wont boot. I had partitined my HD into two volumes, one containing the OS (PB Main) and the other a empty working volume. I tried DiskWarrior 3 but it could not see the hard drive OS, that is PB Main. It didf see the working volume.  When I try to quit DW 3, it just restarts the laptop. Further, I cannot eject the DW CD from the laptop sincew contains the only viable OS.. It appears that the OS and/or the PBMain director is blown, but DW3 cannot fix it because it cannot "see: the HD' OS. However, DW3 does "see" the ATA hard drive and can test it showing that it is fine from a hardware point of view and it "sees" the empty working volume.

I am now in a catch 22 where the laptop appears to have to go back to the factory because I cannot eject the DW 3 disk so that I could reformat the HD with the OS installer! wallbash.gif

Can any help as I was trying to get my financial data onto the laptop before I move:

1) I need to get the DW3 CD out of the laptop

2) I need to copy all my critical financial files onto the laptop. My financial client is Quicken however, I cannot locate all the critical Quicken files in my G4.

3) If  I can get my laptop up and running again, can I transfer files via the ethernet by connecting the laptop to the router?

Thanks,

MamaMoose

Try the PMU Reset.  huh.gif

PowerBook G4 and PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)

 1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
 2. Press and release the reset button located on the rear panel of the computer between the external video and modem ports.
 3. Wait 5 seconds.
 4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

MamaMoose:

If you hold the eject button while your restarting from quiting the Disk Warrior CD, after the shut chime and during the restart process, the bay should open allowing you to take out the disk.  After your rebooted you can then hit the eject button to close the bay tray.

Neither of the approches worked but thanks for the suggestions. My situation is now as follows: I have a Ti 500 MHz laptop which has two volumes (partitions) of which the volume containing the OS is wiped in some manner. I have a DiskWarrior 3 CD in the CD-R drive. DW now "sees" the volume containing the OS but shows the folowing message:

"Directory cannot be rebuilt because ... trying to access this disk (::3, ::4)."

"• This disk is not mounted on the desktop."

Since the only OS available is on the DW CD, I think that prevents the CD from being ejected. I can turn the system off but it won't eject the CD.And, there is no eject key on this powerbook. I see this as a fault as one cannot mechainically eject the CD.

Am I right in saying that the laptop has to go back to Apple where they will have to open the case and then open the CD-R device and extract the CD? Fortunately AppleCare for this laptop has not expired.

Sometimes this works, at least I have seen this tip elsewhere--If you can, open iTunes and then click on the Eject CD icon that is on the bottom right.

P.S. This should work when other methods fail (according to Apple Knowledge Base Document 106752). http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106752

"I decided to just copy apps and data via FireWire however ejecting the Ti HD icon failed."

What computer did you have it connected to?

"So, I shut down the laptop and then I had a disaster since now the Ti wont boot. I had partitined my HD into two volumes, one containing the OS (PB Main) and the other a empty working volume. I tried DiskWarrior 3 but it could not see the hard drive OS, that is PB Main."

Did you parttion it using Disk Utility?

If so, the reason that DW can't see one partition is that when you partitioned it, you did not check the little checkbox labelled "Include OS 9 Drivers" for that partition. It's an easy mistake to make--the checkbox is off by default. Fixing this mistake requires reformatting the hard drive.

"I am now in a catch 22 where the laptop appears to have to go back to the factory because I cannot eject the DW 3 disk so that I could reformat the HD with the OS installer!"

To eject the CD on any Mac, turn on the Mac and hold down the mouse button. This works on PowerBooks and iBooks, too.

"If I can get my laptop up and running again, can I transfer files via the ethernet by connecting the laptop to the router?"

Yes. But FireWire is much faster.

You can probably fix the damaged partition by attaching the TiBook to your desktop system by FireWire, then running DW on the FireWire volume. You can't run DW from CD without installing OS 9 drivers, but you *can* run DW from a desktop while the portable is connected via FirewWire (in fact, I just hadd to do this with my iBook this evening, which is why I'm still up at 3 AM).

Tom. Don't know the latest. But have you tried the Open Firmware fix? huh.gif

 1) reboot while holding option-command-o-f (boot into open firmware)
 2) type reset-nvram
 3) type reset-all
 4) reboot

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. I finally got  the CD out and the4n used my OS 10.2.0 CD to 1) reformat the Ti laptop's hard drive using Drive Setup and 2) install the OS. However, about 90% into the install, the installer bombed out and now I cannot even install the OS. I sure wish I had a complete OS 10.2.4 or 10.2,6 intall CD set. Can't seem to find one anywhere. The process I use is to install 10.2.0 then upgrade to 10.2.1 using the combo, then upgarde using the 10.2.2 combo, and finally upgrade using the 10.2.4 or 10.2.6 combos. This is necessary since 10.2.4 or 10.2.6 upgrades.won't work without having 10.2.2 as the current OS. (Note that with my G4, I have to stay with OS 10.2.4 because my GCC Elite laser printer won't work with any higher OS).

In any case, I have a dead Ti laptop which I cannot repair via AppleCare since I rep[laced thge original HD with a much higher capacity one. By the way, I was able to install 10.2.x on the new HD. It was after the FireWire Target Disk Mode Disasater with Carbon Copy Cloner that the 10.2.0 install failed.

I do not feel it was a problem with CCC rather it was an inherent problem with FWTDM intercating with the G4 and the Ti such that one could not remove the Ti HD icon on the g4 unless by brute force shutting down.

I find it hard to believe that somehow my FWTDM problem damaged the Ti's hard drive. Ist that possible?

In any case once more I come hat in hand to beg help from TS - how do I get the OS 10.2 x install tro complete without bombing outr. Better, How can I get my hands on an OS 10.2.4 install CD? It appears Apple has never generated the latest OS on a CD - certainly the Apple store nor Comp USA have anything but OS 10.2.0 CDs available.

I am rerally unhappy with Apple right  now and I certainly will wait several years before installing Panther - I am too old to go thru the aggravation.

MM. Had you earlier formatted the Hard Drive with other software?  huh.gif

I'd take out any RAM you might have added and try again.

Kelly,

No, I used the OS 10.2.0 install CD to format the new hard drive with Disk Utility. Also, I had added RAM several months ago - 384 MB, total. After first install, I suvccessfully upgraded to 10.2.4.

It was when I tried to close FireWire Target Disk Mode on the G$ Main frame that all the trouble began, and now I cannot even finish the 10.2.0 install even though I reformattedthe HD and using the install CD, tested the HD. The test showed all was well.

Perhaps, my second (new) RAM chip is blown leaving me with insufficient RAM to complete the install.

I will boot up the Ti laptop in the next few days and  write down the error message I get when I try to install OS 10.2.4. By the way, It took the install ~ 2 hours to get to the 95% point when it failed. Isthis too long for a 500 MHz machine?

Again, thanks for your help.

Tom
