Slow internet connection
« on: September 26, 2003, 01:04:25 PM »
I have finally got my PowerMac fixed and able to connect to the internet.  Some of you may remember my topics on internal modem problems.  I had replaced my original internal modem and it did not fix the problem.  I sent the modem back.  Since then I have ordered a new replacement wire and phone jack for inside the computer.  The wire runs to the internal modem.  After replaceing the wire I am able to connect to the internet.  The problem is the best connection speed I am getting is 16800bps.  I have checked my setting and everything looks set right for the modem.  Is it possible the modem got damaged enough to cause this?

Just ran Drive 10 disk utitlity just as a precaution.  The report showed bad blocks and was also unable to complete test.  Recomended backing up data and more less reinstalling my system?  Is it a possiblility this may also fix my connection speed problem?

All I know is that anything is possible. I don't know if the bad blocks would be causing it but....you never know.

I take it you did the work yourself.

I'm not familiar with Drive 10.

Did Drive 10 tell you where the bad blocks are located? If they are in your Directory you could have a problem.

If you have DiskWarrior I'd run it.

No Disk Warrior here.  I believe the bad blocks had to do with media files, don't have the exact wording.  Yes, I replaced the internal wire myself.  Seemed simple enough.  I will most likely reinstall OS X.

Bad Blocks certainly wouldn't help anything.  huh.gif

Are there any other odd symptoms with your machine?

We've had discussions here where Bad Block were serious and trivial.

If yours is the former, a Reformat would probably be a good idea.

Drive Setup: Checking For Bad Blocks

"Reallocation (sparing) of bad blocks that the ATA drive tracks will occur when the block is subsequently written to. Thus the best way to force the drive to reallocate bad blocks is to initialize using the write zeros feature. Use Test Disk to verify surface integrity only. Given this strategy, there on occasion may be a need to initialize using write zeros, verify using Test Disk and if any errors occur, attempt to reinitialize using write zeros again."

After you installed the new stuff did you press the Cuda or Reset Button?

Have you done a thorough PRAM Zap on the machine?  huh.gif

I have reinstalled OS X and OS 9, this time on two separate partitions.  Operation seems snappier but my connection speed is still at 16800bps.  Even when dialing up in OS 9.

No I have not pressed the cuda button or done a PRAM Zap.  I will try the PRAM Zap until I am able reopen the computer and press the cuda button.

I have a bad feeling that not only did that storm ruin my internal modem wire but has also damaged the modem itself.   mad.gif

Oh, and Bill.  I don't need to hear anything about AppleCare!  wink.gif

Zapped PRAM.  Didn't make a difference.

Other than the connection speed everything works great.

Have you tried calling the phone company and having them check your connection? I once found out that my speed was limited by SW Bell. Could be true in your case.

Thanks for the suggestion Bbob but I have now connected using my old iMac.  It shows a connection rate of 46667bps.  When listening to the modem communicate when connecting, the iMac even sounds different then my PowerMac.  The iMac connects faster.  The PowerMac makes noise longer and makes a funny extra noise when connecting.  Something is definately still screwy with the PowerMac's modem.

kelly, I just e-mailed MacResQ.  That is where I ordered a replacement modem after your suggestion.  Since it didn't work I sent it back.  I sent a e-mail to them describing my problem.  Mabey they will give me some good advice.

Maybe it's time to send everything you bought back, if you can.  huh.gif

And go with an External USB Modem.  huh.gif

Ryan.
Try this.
Switch the modem script to 34>reboot and see what happens.
Then switch back over to whatever you're using>reboot and see what happens.
Don't just go by the "apply now" in X. Reboot anyways.

Try a number of different modem scripts to be sure that it's not your script.  You'd be surprised.
