Yes. YES. YES!!! (Part 2)
« on: September 29, 2003, 06:08:10 AM »
This morning at 9am, my PowerMac G5 arrived! smile.gif

I have just begun installing my files, but even without serious testing I can already tell: it's fast! thumbup.gif

Like Mike, I have the CPU-Monitor runing and it's cool to see the two processors work.

I'm currently installing Quake 3 Arena, just to see what this baby is capable of. biggrin.gif

This is going to be a fun day! smile.gif

Now you can know the joy of only sleeping a few hours a night wink.gif

My quake 3 score: 1024x768, all settings on highest. Did a timedemo with a demo found at xlr8yourmac.com. First run 297.5 fps. Second run 302.1 fps. This is with the cpu setting in Energy Saver set to automatic.

I just ran it with cpu setting to highest, and got 302.0 fps. However, I did notice that everything was a bit faster on highest setting (i.e., system preferences was launched and ready before it finished one bouce, under automatic, it takes a fraction of a second longer).

How did you find out about the FPS?
When I use the cg_drawFPS command the game only shows 90 FPS, which means that it is unable to display a higher number.

My Q3A is set to all high at 1280 x 1024.

@kps:
It's a Dual 2 GHz. smile.gif

LEADER! Congratulations Spartacus. smile.gif

GM. After 200 FPS or so it's hard to see the difference. wink.gif

Actually anything over 30 FPS will look good.

And I don't think humans can see any diffference over 60 FPS.

Just nice to not have it lag in spots. smile.gif

You guys should try the ATI Demos. Pretty cool.

I know, but 300 fps sounds so good biggrin.gif

Spartacus: Here is what I did. I used the demo file at xlr8yourmac. I launched quake 3, brought down the console (using tilde), typed in 'timedemo 1', closed the console, and ran the demo file. When it's done running, open the console to see you FPS.

Just a quick update on the situation with my G5.

I have a max. of 135 fps when runing the Q3A demo. I guess Mike's Radeon 9800 is just a little more powerful. smile.gif

However, today I had three complete freezes in a row. Every time when I was trying to copy large quantities of files from my G4 to my G5. At first I thought it were too many files at once (approx. 70,000 files), but when I reduced the number of files, it would still hang.  sad.gif
Don't know. I don't really trust the first-time installs performed from the CDs that shipped with the computer. It's just not what I'd call a clean install.
But on the other hand I don't want to start installing all over again. <sigh>

Might as well repair permissions on both machines, check the disks using fsck, etc. It's better than reinstaling.

Nothing.
Except for my Logitech MouseMan Dual Optical and my Headphones.

I am currently using my headphones again because whenever I connected the G5 to my stereo I could hear on the speakers...well...I thought it sounded like the power current from the G5. So I quickly disconected the Hifi again. I guess I'll need one of those magnets (or whatever it is) around the cable that connects the G5 with the stereo.

Copying small amounts of data seems to be okay, though. I tested it and less than 1,000 files always worked fine.

What's interesting though is, that whenever the G5 freezes all fans start spinning at top-speed. Without the fan-management of OS X that beast is extremely loud! smile.gif
