Setting default e-Mail client & browser in 10.3

According to Steve manke in an OWC newsletter, setting the default e-mail client and browser is not as simple as it is in 10.2. First , you must load Safari and Mail initially. Then follow the instructions in this link:

I guess Apple is trying to force you to use their own proprietary browser (Safari) and OS X Mail in Entourage rather than 3rd party apps.

Does anyone know a more direct way to set these defaults? I am concerned since I have not loaded Entourage in OS 10.2 and I use Eudora as my e-mail client. I have not succeeded in getting Safari to work on my system. I am uncomfortable having Entourage and Safari "lurking" in the background when I do not need them.

MamaMoose, I'm a bit puzzled as to why you haven't been able to get Safari to work. What exactly is the problem? I've never had a problem with it, and it is now my preferred browser by a country mile (followed by Mozilla/Netscape). I wouldn't worry about it "lurking" - if you've chosen another browser as your default, it should stick. Same for Mail. I rarely use Mail - Entourage is my preferred mail client, and that preference certainly stuck through the Panther install a few minutes ago. The only way Mail opens is if I deliberately open it.
