Hi, just wondering if anyone has ever had a Virus on OSX.

Do we really need a virus scan,???

Haven't heard of any yet. Probably not.

Not high on my list of things to be concerned about.

Might just be a matter of time though.

Hi,
I do have an antivirus. I do it mainly for protection, although I feel the threat level is quite low if not next to none.
But, I still feel the need to have it and so I do and keep it updated. I guess old habits are hard to break.

Not yet Nikki. I am using NAV 8.0.4 and am quite happy with it, but it does have some drawbacks, most notably it does not scan for PC viri. However, the next release/upgrade is rumored to do that.

My main concern is that I get a Word Macro virus. There are just so many variants, and I receive numerous M$ Word files from associates. Additionally, I would hate to pass along a virus if I could have prevented it.

Since moving to OSX I'm not "using protection" for the first time in years. However, I'm now sharing files (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) more often than ever between work and home, so I'm a bit concerned about this--and find myself thinking that I really need to start using one again.

Harv, until now, I've always used NAV, but got scared by all of the reports about anything Symantec and OSX. Sounds like you've been fine with it so far. I was glad to hear that. So far I've not read good reviews at VersionTracker about VirusBarrierX or NAV.

Rob, I too am one of those who tried Norton System Works and as a result, only concur with those who damn it with their every breath. But as far as Symantec's Anti Virus program, never a bit of trouble. So I endorse it with a 3.5 star rating.

Don't be so cautious, Harv--tell us what you really think! Can I assume the 3.5 stars are out of 4 and not out of, say 10?

I have TTPs Virus protection active BUT I don't really think it does anything except flash a dialog box up.

I've not yet had a virus affect OS X, but I've received three in mails that I could have passed on had I not known.
I use VirusBarrier, while Virex came with .mac. I don't regret forking out for a .mac site, but I prefer VirusBarrier.

Since OS X's underpinnings, freeBDS (Unix), is made for networking and security, we are still in pretty good shape.

Unix has been around since before Windows, so a lot of people (hackers, virus writers) know about it, making it more vulnerable than the original Mac OS. But in defense for our new OS, it is also been created for networks and security is high priority, making it pretty darn safe as well.

It's very important to still have a virus protection program and a firewall.
