We just upgraded to Word 2001...
« on: November 02, 2003, 07:53:32 PM »
This is it-

We've been using Word 6 for years.  Word 6 has a macro called "Word 5.1 Upgrade" in which, when "5.1 keyboard shortcuts"  button is pressed, a package of 5.1 keyboard shortcuts is added that are really useful.  The shortcut we use all the time is "Command + =", which sums a column in a Word document that has been selected or performs a simple mathmatical expression.

Our document are generally delivery slips with feed ingredients listed in rows, with the item, the unit price and total price listed across.  Then we need to sum down the total price column for a total feed mix price.  Really very simple!   We also need to be able to use the multiply/divide function that worked in Word 6  i.e. 2140/1000*240 .  In Word 6, we could blacken (select) this expression and hit "command+=" to get a calculated total that was pasted to the clipboard which then we could paste into the desired location.

When this keystroke shortcut is used in Word 2001, all we get is all the characters subscripted - that's not good at all!  Word 2001 seems much more like Excel and the "AutoSum" command seems to require filled cells, a formula from the table menu etc.  That's WAAAY too complicated for something this simple.

All we want to do is add a  simple keystroke shortcut that will add up a column or calculate a simple   mathmatical expression.

And we need a solution this problem by Monday (tomorrow) at 8 AM!

If it makes a difference, we're running a 4 older Mac ethernet network - the G3 iMac is the main computer, with 2 G3 AIO's (that we just got over Ebay) and a 6500.  We're not doing anything complicated with the network, just running Word most of the time, but we are trying to upgrade to something reasonably compatible, since for unknown reasons,  the AIOs won't allow saving document changes over the network when running Word 6.  But unfortunately the 6500 on OS 8.1 won't run Word 2001. So right now we're just testing Word 2001 to see if the 3 newer machines will work with it, and then perhaps we'll upgrade the 6500 to OS 8.6 to enable Word 2001.   But unless we can get the calculate function to work, we'll have to go back to Word 6, and back to square one with the document saving problems.

Thanks for your help!

Peter, in Word X (I don't have 2001) that macro is still there - if you look in the list it's called Word5Menus - and it says that it displays the same commands that were available in Word 5.1. Is that it? I would think that if it was in Word 6 and in Word for OS X, it should be there in 2001. I have never used macros, so don't know what to do beyond that (Run?). tongue.gif

welcome.gif to TS Peter's Mom!

I am not certain this is what you are looking for, but perhaps it will get things started.

1. Click the cell in which you want the total to appear.
2. On the Table menu, click Formula.
3. If the cell you selected is at the bottom of a column of numbers, Word proposes the formula =SUM(ABOVE). Click OK if this is correct.
If the cell you selected is at the right end of a row of numbers, Word proposes the formula =SUM(LEFT). Click OK if this is correct.

Notes:
•  If you see field codes between braces — for example, {=SUM(LEFT)} — instead of the actual sum, Word is displaying field codes. To display field code results, press OPTION+F9.
•  If your column or row contains blank cells, Word will not sum the entire column or row. To total the entire row or column, type zeros in the blank cells.
•  To quickly total a row or column of numbers, click the cell where you want the sum, and then click AutoSum (sigma sign) on the Tables and Borders toolbar.

If that is not of help, maybe you can find exactly what you are looking for by opening a Word document, going to Help (in the menu bar) and then selecting "Microsoft Word Help," and then doing a search on "addition."

Hope this helps. But if it does not, please post again. There are others about who know far more about Word than I.

And by the way, a mighty fine lad you have there. You must be very proud. thumbup.gif

This does not directly address your initial query, but if I understand your whole post correctly, it might 'speak' to the underlying problem you are trying to solve.

Have you thought about or tried Word 98?

It's bigger and more bloated than Word 6, but not nearly as much as Word 2001 is, and it will be much closer in functionality and look-and-feel to your good old familiar Word 6.

On another note, are all the Macs running OS 8.1?  If not, what?  The probs saving over the network might be some arcane OS-version compatibility glitch that will go away if all the machines are running a common OS version.

Nota Bene and Caveat Emptor:

This is a theory in my mind, based on a gut feeling, not borne out by any empirical evidence, testing, or even anecdotal stories, so don't go upgrading and downgrading all your Macs to make them the same OS on my say-so alone, and then come hunt me down and shoot me if it does not turn out to be the case, capeche?

What OS is running on the AIOs?

I realize that I've jumped in to this at the 11th hour, but I hope that some of these questions and suggestions prove useful.

If you'd like to correspond w/ me directly about this prob, email me at macdemigod@kbeartx.com.

Peter -

I have a copy and I am happy to loan it to you for evaluation, but the question is how to accomplish this practically?

Do you have a broadband connection to the 'net?

Please email me directly (see above post).

PS - I am about to leave for a couple o' hours, and can work on this upon my return, but I am serious about taking this 'off the board'.

More Problems wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif  wallbash.gif

When we switched back to Word 6.0 this morning, my mom found a problem.  Now the iMac has a 4 second lag, every 4 seconds.  It essentialy is on for 4 seconds, then off for 4 seconds. (computer stays on, just dosen't process)

I don't believe the 6500 does this, and we can't use the AIOs do to their inability to save in Word 6.0

Any ideas?

Thanks and this is urgent, these computers run a business that is shipping out over 100 tons of feed per week (lots of bills)
