SoftRAID is excellent RAID software for the Mac. The drivers can be used on a RAID system or an non-RAID system - some find SoftRAID drivers superior to Apple drivers, even in non-RAID systems.
SoftRAID 2.2.2 will take you from MacOS 7.5.3 or so to MacOS 9.2.2.
SoftRAID 3.0 is Mac OS X.x specific - how it compares with Apple OS X RAID, I have no idea.
SoftRAID handles:
(0) RAID 0 (STRIPING) for speed - typically used for Photoshop scratch files and
(1) RAID 1 (MIRRORING) for increased data integrity - if one drive fails, your data remains intact on the other).
(2) SoftRAID does not do RAID 0+1, RAID 5, etc.
Mirroring is one good additional tool for one's backup arsenal. Mirroring does not obviate the need for back-ups, but it makes it less likely that you will ever have to use them. SoftRAID makes mirroring easy.
