G5 not going to sleep
« on: November 05, 2003, 06:09:43 AM »
My G5 is not going to sleep anymore.  The screen darkens, but the computer is still awake.  I can get it to sleep by clicking on "Sleep" in the menu bar, but not automatically.  I have repaired permissions - what else can I try? wallbash.gif

Dakota, Are you running Panther? If so, this tip from R. Singer's site may help:

"The solution is to open the Print & Fax pane (Faxing Tab) of System Preferences and uncheck the "Receive faxes on this computer" box. Having fax reception enabled prevents your Macintosh from going into sleep mode normally."

Still running Jaguar.  Nothing has changed - no new software, no new settings. sad.gif

Sorry my help wasn't. This sleep business has been a problem for a long while, though most of the reports I have seen relate to waking from sleep, rather than going to sleep. If you have not already, you may care to ensure you have checked the box in the Energy Control pane that says "put the hard disk to sleep when possible."

If you don't find a real solution, you might try one of the more robust third party apps such as iBeeZz http://ibeezz.reboute.net/en/ or one the other third party products at VersionTracker (search on Sleep).

Found the problem on my own - accidentally.  Norton Autoprotect.  If it's activated, the computer will not sleep.  Deactivate it and problem is one. clap.gif
