Firewire target Mode doesn\'t work
« on: March 03, 2003, 03:37:00 AM »
After trying every trick in the book, I believe my Firewire circuit on my Ti 500 MHz PowerBook is dead! I just cannot get the Ti hard drive to show up on my dual 1 GHz G4. I know the G4 Firewire ports are alive and well since I have a FW hard drive attched to one of them.

My question is how do I test the Ti's Firewire port? (I hesitate to try to hitch my FW hard drive to the Ti for fear of damaging it). Or should I take it into the Aple store and let them analyze the problem? I am running OS 9.2.2 on both units.

Another question: Can I replace the DVD+CD  optical drive with a DVD reader  +CD -R/W burner? Is there such an animal?

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions,

MamaMoose

We had the same problem, all our Macs are using 9.2.2 and they all are OK with the target mode, but my brother's iMac 9.2.2 also, worked just once, and I never could get it to target mode again. My brother's firewire scanner works fine though.   Never figured out why.  I will be interested in what the experts say,,,,,,

MamaMoose. And jcarter.

Are you/they using the latest Firewire version?

I don't think it would hurt to try the Firewire Hard Drive. But you can always wait.

Yes Tom. There is at least one option for the Combo Drive you're looking for.

I'm sure there's others.

Good luck.

Kelly,

I have two FireWire extensions;

FireWire Enabler  2.8.6

FireWire Authoring Support 1.1.2

Are these the correct extensions and/or the correct versions to uise with OS 9.2.2?

MamaMoose. Finding information on this from Apple is like pulling teeth.

Their Knowledge Base really sucks.

Anyone remember the old one that worked great?

The latest version of Firewire I've found is FireWire 2.5

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58642

It doesn't say what versions of those it installs.

This is at least a year and a half old.

You could try it and see if it's newer.

On my machine from a Jaguar Install CD my versions are:

FireWire Enabler 2.8.7

FireWire Authoring Support 2.8.7

Probably just for OS X use. I don't know.

One more article on Troubleshooting.
