eMac Disk First Aid
« on: November 12, 2003, 11:41:17 AM »
I went to "First Aid" and ran Repair Permissions  as recommended by a  Sr. Net friend. The hard drive icon is located there, but there is another icon called  "38 CB Maxtor". Can anyone tell me what this means. I entered it into the Help Menu, and they did not recognize it at all........how can something be installed, and Help can't find it ? I am puzzled. June huh.gif

Are you sure it doesn't read "38 'G'B Maxtor" June?

That could be your hard drive being "Maxtor" and "38" indicating size or available.

I agree with Bill, it's probably your HDD in Gigabytes (GB).

I have a 60 GB and a 40 GB in my Mac. The 40GB shows up as 38.29 GB Maxtor. There's a certain amount that's not available after the HDD is formatted.

June:  What the guys are saying is that OS X's DiskAid shows your hard drive as what it is, then below it and indented, as a kinda sub folder, what you've named the hard drive.

Mine looks like this
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Bill, correct. It  is GB Maxtor.
What  do you mean by my hard drive being "Maxtor" ?

Gary,What is HDD ??

Jepinto, I tried to copy and paste what mine says, but it wouldn't work. The top item is 38.29 GB Maxtor, then below that is the Hard drive Icon, and both icons are identical......so......... do I understand correctly that "Maxtor" is really my hard drive, and my Hard disk or as listed HD is like an alias ??

Sorry I am so obtuse.....but I am trying....honest.  blush-anim-cl.gif

June:  Yes.  That's one way to think of it.  When you want to "Repair Disk Permissions" click on the second one (the indented one) and then in the right hand pane, click on the tab that says "First Aid" then in the bottom left hand of the ssame right hand pane, click on "Repair Permissions"

"Maxtor" means that your hard drive is a Maxtor brand.

wink.gif Let me add, it doesn't really make sense to me either, but it works, so until I find more time to understand it, I'm willing to settle for fix. wink.gif

Jepinto.......thank you !! Now I understand..is is like a brand name...I thought it was something that did some sort of action...like maximize something. Duh...I feel very comfortable with it now. Apple  does not always make things simple for us, and that is why I thank you all for being here to unravel what is not understood. Thank you all.....so very much. June

Yeah June.

Maxtor is the brand name (manufactures name) of your Hard Drive.

Jennies image states hers is 'IBM' and mine states it is 'FUJITSU'.

June:

As a general rule, if you go and open your Apple System Profiler . . .

. . . COMPUTER-->(YOUR) HARD DRIVE-->APPLICATIONS-->UTILITIES-->A.S. PROFILER

. . . you can find all sorts of specific descriptive details on your SYSTEM, the various DEVICES AND VOLUMES driven by your system, plus lists of EXTENSIONS, APPLICATIONS and other goodies. You'll find version numbers which will help you understand "what's in there"! Really.

FIND will quickly detect items you have named as you're created documents, or the elements of your OS provided by Apple, but it's unlikely to find such information as the brand name of your HD.

Apple System Profiler provides all that "stuff" in a flash . . . well, almost in a flash.  laugh.gif

Good Grief Dick !! I just looked at all that stuff you suggested, and my eyeballs are spinning and my brain feels weak. I couldn't possibly digest all that information in a million years..and it just gives me more words that I do not understand the meaning of. However.......I know that if I ever get bored...there are more things to learn, so I appreciate your guiding me to that area. And thank you for the Find information..many times I have typed in things that it could not find, and now I know why. June

June,

There sure is a lot of stuff these days. You would think they would try and make it simpler but.........that's not the case.

I use HDD because it's a habit. It used to be there were may different types of Drives such as
Floppy, Zip, tape..........you name it. Well there still is a lot of different types of drives. smile.gif
