George, I think the way most versions of Stuffit work...
1. Open Stuffit and go to Preferences
2. Select "Expansion." There you will see a drop down menu where one may determine the Expansion Desination.
3. It is probable the expansion location is where you determined it to be. If you prefer, you may easily reset it to Desktop (I have).

George, if I'm not mistaken, you can override the location chosen in preferences (or the default location, if you haven't chosen another) each time you unstuff something. But, I think if you download something that is compressed, it will unstuff in the location you selected for the download to go to. Many times the unstuffing is automatic from a download, with no user input required.

Thanks boys,
if it were only that simple, my problem was not knowing what I know now, as a result of unstuffing at least half a dozen times on desktop
the unstuffed items have gone into a folder ..........................................things have moved on........Eureka I found it and cracked it.
Application up and running.
Christmas has come early.
Thanks Harv (a very special Happy Christmas to you)
My thanks to you Gregg.
George.
