Printing web page data
« on: December 19, 2003, 06:03:44 PM »
G4 tower, running 10.2.6, and Safari.

A given web page appears, displaying tabular data.

Simply calling up PRINT produces text in a font too small for easy reading by . . . uhm . . . more mature citizens, so to speak.

TextEdit's HELP suggests that it's paper size that is the determinant of that "issue". Sure enough, the same page printed in portrait displays tiny type, as opposed to more readable type via a landscape orientation.

However, THE spouse wants the larger type on a portrait printout.

Accordingly, this is a problem that needs to be dealt with, IMO. Got that, husbands out there?  whistling.gif

Any suggestions?

TextEdit's Preference settings do not seem to have an effect on web page printouts . . . at least not as far as I can determine.

Can't respond directly to TextEdit but a couple work-arounds might do.

If all you need is the text from the site you can copy/paste into a text doc, increase font size and print.

If formatting is important and that is lost by copy/paste you can increase the size of the text within the browser (IE is Command +)  then take screen shots at the larger size and print those. I did that recently for my Mom when the "fine print" on a page was beyond any normal eyesight.

Dick, As I recall, this is a bug in Safari and relates to the page size and its relativity to the window. I saw the explanation once, but clearly, I did not understand it.

There is no fix per-se, but a work around:

1. Select the page (site) your bride wishes to print.
2. Click & drag the Size tab in the lower right of the window to make the Safari window about half as small as it was.
3. Print.
4. Some readjustments with the window size may be necessary.

Another reason to move to Panther. harhar.gif

And if this doesn't help, see Krissel's comments above. biggrin.gif

I do what Krissel mentioned. It's really fast and easy on OS9x with SimpleText in my Desk Accessories Folder in my Apple menu.

Sounds like Bob has a good answer for OSX with the PDF deal.

Have I mentioned lately that I miss the Scrapbook in OSX? I wish they would bring that back. It is so useful for keeping stuff in.

Do you have a Print Page dialog window that is adjusted/modified by your printer? Not sure how that is handled in OS X, but back in 9, my Epson driver window has 3 basic methods of printing; fit to page, print what fits-dump the rest, and print as many pages as needed and paste them together.

In the Page Setup dialog there is also a choice of percentages to use when printing.

Finally, although I think Safari has limited sizing options, you might just try setting those larger for these pages.

The PDF method sounds the simplest. What worked best?
Perhaps you should write the webmaster and suggest s/he use a print stylesheet, at least on the pages with tables, it's actually quite simple to do and it is possible to even have different size text choices.

Thanks, guys.

"Work-arounds" in abundance, since it appears there are no hidden tricks to be discovered in the sw. In passing, it strikes me that work-arounds are more frequently the answer than not, and they're primarily why TeeEss is so valuable . . . a compendium of workarounds from smart (and generous) folks.

It remains to be seen which My Beloved chooses as most convenient, over time.

I am really grateful for all the informed advice. clap.gif

Interim Report  from the Front:

1. Printing a PDF?    Nope!
2. Printing a shrunken Safari page?   Nope!

Stay tuned.

Dick, can you give us a sample URL of a page that is giving you the problem. It might be easier to imagine a resolution (no pun intended) if we can see the a particular page.

Some of us are visually oriented.  biggrin.gif
