Some advice from the photographers...
« on: March 06, 2003, 04:05:00 PM »
I'm indicisive on buying one of this two cameras:
The Olympus C-400Z or the Canon S45

I know that I have to spend about $150 more if I buy the Canon (an extra battery and a bigger card) because I already have AA rechargeable batts and a 128MB SmatMedia from my Olympus D-510Z.
I want to upgrade to 4MP and I saw the reviews of both cameras from this places:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html

http://www.megapixel.net/html/issueindex.html

http://www.imaging-resource.com/FEAT1.HTM

I think (and that's all, considering my limited knowlege) that the Canon is better, despite the great reviews of the C-4000Z on this places, but I want to know from you if:

the Canon S45 is really a better camera, and if it is, worth the extra money.

Thanks in advance for your time and help

Jorge, here is another digital camera review site that has the most comprehensive reviews I have found online: http://www.dpreview.com/

Canon S 45 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons45/

I didn't find a review for the Olympus...

This review http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympusc5050z/ has a comparison with the Olympus 4040; you may be able to glean more information about Olympus digital cameras in this and other Olympus reviews at the website.

Sorry I cannot offer specific feedback on the cameras you are considering...I am still digitally-impaired, camera-wise.

As far as buying photo gear goes, I strongly lean toward getting the best you can afford, and I tend to save my pennies until I buy what I really want.  That way I am never disappointed with my purchase, even if I had to wait a tad longer to get the more expensive and capable item.

Good luck!

Mayo:

Tank you for your kindness.
I saw the comparison between the Olympus 5050, A Sony and the Canon G3 (experts say that the S40 and S45 are a shrink G3), and the reviewer was impressed with the G3 despite the  1 Megapixel short of the Canon.
Well, maybe I'm waiting to be reasured that the Canon is best, because it is what I like the most.

Thanks again

Jorge, we bought Canon A40's (not the higher megapixel S40/S45) for our kids for Christmast this year - and I find myself "borrowing" their cameras instead of using mine - a Coolpix 950. They seem very well made, extremely easy to use and seem to produce very nice results. Judging by the reviews at dpreview.com (also my favorite online review site) the S45 looks like a good choice. It also will take a microdrive, should you go for LOTS of storage. With the higher megapixel cameras, that is starting to seem like a much more important consideration.

Between the two the Canon S45 is a better camera.
