Need help with Finder OS 8.6
« Reply #1 on: December 29, 2003, 01:39:04 AM »
First line of attack is to trash finder, ASLM, Mac OS and system preferences.

Run disk first aid.

Try disconnecting any peripherals while working.

Do anything different two days ago, like add some software?

Any particular reason you aren't running OS 9? I know 8.6 was very stable but if you are running newer apps they may be happier with 9.

BTW, you may try interleaving your Ram by placing them in matching pairs, that is, putting two 128 chips in A1, B1, two 64 chips in A2, B2 and so on. This is not in response to the crashing problem but may give you an added boost in speed.

thanx.gif for the suggestions, I will try the Ram thing. I run 8.6 because I have the full version 8.5 cd been looking for a cheap up grade to 9.1, the holidays have drained the wallet for a couple of monthes and I plan on getting a Motherboard up grade for my Performa 6400 and maybe a desktop G3 266mhz. Looks like I will have to reinstall again, the last thing I did a week ago was fix some bad sectors on the hard drive and reinstall the OS, I did a low level format before reinstall. Were can I save the bookmarks for IE 5.1?

Maybe a bad RAM chip? I agree with the OS9 upgrade suggestion, too..

Are you using Norton DiskLight, ACTION Files or ACTION Menus? They are known to cause Finder crashes under 8.6.

Have you tried running with only Apple extensions enabled? If that solves your problem, you have a bad third-party extension or control panel.

Have you installed the OS 8.6 Font Manager Update extension? This is absolutely required if you use 8.6.
A whole lot about me: www.xeromag.com/franklin.html

Didn't mention the Font Manager cause I figured you would have done that by now but I guess I shouldn't assume such things.  rolleyes.gif

As for the favorites from IE, you can save the file which is located in the System folder/Preferences/Explorer. In fact you could save the whole folder but not the cache.

Chris,

When did you install Chakaranda's Mac OS 8.6 Finder Patch? I don't know what it exactly is but
from what I read on the MacWorld site, it modifies the Finder in some way. You may want to get rid of that.

I would make sure you apply that Font Manager update... it's real important. You mat want to run "Corrupted FOND Fixer Utility" - you can get it at Alsoft in Kelly' link:

Alsoft Fond Fixer and Font manager update
