Eudora 6 woes

May be somebody can help me.

I have been a fervent user of Eudora since the early 90's.I have been
using 5.1 for the last 5-6 years or so, appreciating its reliable
performance.

I just installed Sponsored Eudora 6 over my Sponsored 5.1 . I want to
uninstall 6 ASAP !!!

- It is so slow to open on my G3 updated Mac 4400 with OS 9.0.4, that
I just can't use it. It takes 14 seconds to open!
- It also similarly slowed the opening of my 5.1, i.e. 14 seconds,
where it was 2-3 seconds before I installed 6.
- Though my french and english dictionaries were transferred on 6,
they're no longer available on my 5.1.
- When I open 6 , it no longer automatically checks my mail. 5.1 still does.
- The manual Check Mail (Command-M) takes 10 seconds to open the
"have or have not mail" dialog. The dialog opens instantly on 5.1.
- I checked the settings on both versions and they're exactly the same.

I guess my computer configuration is not suitable for this version 6
of Eudora. PLEASE, PLEASE, somebody tell me how to uninstall 6 so I can go
back using what was my reliable 5.1.

PS. Since my Eudora is in sponsered mode, there is NO tech support available from Eudora. In order to have any support from Eudora I would have to purchase it for some 49.95.

I had a similar problem with 6.
I went back to 5.2.1b2 to be exact.

First thing is to go into the system folder and take the Eudora folder out and put it somewhere else. Your mailboxes and other things you may want to save are in there.

You can then throw away the Eudora Application folder which is probably on the main level of your booting volume. Then download and install 5.2 fresh. Once that is done you can manually transfer your mailboxes from the saved folder into the new Eudora folder that was created in the system folder. Don't get the two folders mixed up, one has the application and plug-ins,etc. and the other is in the system folder with your mail.

Aside from your mailboxes, you will also want to transfer the Eudora settings, nicknames, etc., in fact you could probably just move the whole folder and replace the one that is there but I don't remember if there is anything 6 did to alter the actual folder name that would make 5 not recognize it. If you do it piecemeal don't bother to move the ads folder or the cache.

It really isn't difficult as long as you save your mailboxes, settings and nicknames (addresses) to put in the new install. If your special dictionaries are normally in that folder make sure they are put back, too.

I had no problems at all reverting. To be extra safe, make a copy of your Eudora folder (from the system folder) and put it away somewhere or on an external location. That way you will not lose your saved mail and addresses regardless of what happens.

I wonder if installing Eudora 6 over version 5 may be the catalyst for your problems...  I upgraded from Eudora 4 to 6 when I also upgraded to Panther, but I did a new install on a drive that did not have an earlier version of Eudora.

After I installed Eudora (non-sponsored mode) I moved essential files from Eudora 4 to 6, including the settings, filters and mail folders.  The new Eudora looks the same as the old and has pretty much worked flawlessly so far.  The only glitch is that occasionally I get a window message about the settings not being readable and then another suggesting that I might close some Finder windows.  It feels like an old-time out of memory thing, but I have plenty of RAM and I haven't had memory problems with OS X and its memory management system.


Someone else may know what that is all about, but my simple fix has been to just quit Eudora and then start it up again, or restart the Mac.  It has been such a minor thing that I haven't bothered to trouble-shoot it.

I hope that this is not being redundant or off-topic BUT the readers should know that under Panther Eudora6 is VERY VERY fast.   I love it.  I suspect that it is optimized for OS  X   and   perhaps those complaining would (at the very least) update to O S  9.2.1 or 9.2.2  then perhaps their problems will evaporate.

Thanks guys. I'm back on air with 5.2 and everything is now fine and speedy. Unfortunately (for me), currently with my lowly although G3 upgraded 4400, I can't go any higher than OS 9.1, thus not being able to appreciate FLASH1296's comment as I can't install OS X.
