Turning a G5 into a PC...

European Mac fans are goggling in disbelief at this one. Is he serious... or has he lost his mind?

It's possible alright.

But it sure is stupid.  doh.gif

I do think it could be an elaborate hoax.

For a couple of reasons:

1. That's a HUGE waste of money!

2. They wanted a "Dell" which EVERYONE knows is the "arch-enemy" of Apple.
     A. That "monster" would void both Apple's and Dells warranties.
     B. Any "geek" would build a PC hardware system from one of the many PC motherboard
manfacturers - for less $$$ and with better specs than that Dell.

3. The G5 is cool looking, but the new Alienware PCs are wicked looking with a retro '60s
automotive theme. - Basically I don't "buy" their premise about best looking case.

'course on thu otha' hand - there are plenty of fools in the world. And having bags of cash doesn't make you smart.

Got a 404 error on that link, but this sounds like the same story I just saw on an e-mail list. The story was attributed to Randy Singer, the Mac Guru and lawyer. And I responded pretty much the same as zodraz about the veracity of the story. Either it's a hoax or there some extremely stupid and uncaring people in this world! doh.gif  eek2.gif  Thinking.gif

Sorry, that was a 403.9 error, I just ronded it off... nono.gif

Page is there now (well, at least ONE link that others have had trouble with works for me!...that funny one that Jennie posted never appears)

I suspect it's a hoax - look at the green light in the second "after" interior shot. He goofed, and got the green on the OUTSIDE of the case edge on the left side, on the side of the power supply facing the camera and in a lot of other places one wouldn't expect to see it. Plus, if you drop the image into Photoshop and zoom in, there is a suspicious edge to the motherboard - white pixels etc. The image at the top of the second page is similarly a dead giveaway - look at the green on the power supply. Oops.

The shot of the back of the computer is similarly suspicious - if you look at the focus on the PC ports, it's very soft and there's all sorts of weirdness going on with the image. The rest of the image (apart from where he fiddled with it) is quite sharp.

Clever, but not quite clever enough... Some people really do have too much time on their hands!

Hi Paddy!

Got some time on my hands now! wink.gif The Flu does that sometimes... I was inspired by your comments on this wackodude & his Dellified G5! Dropped some images in Photoshop, but to my bitter disappointment, I could not see any signs of Faking...Ok, some edges were blurred and pixellised...But after all it was a 71 dpi pic. The green lights do seem right! I thought I saw two! fluorescent tubes, which explains the strange reflections, esp. on the powersupp-case... And the reflections on the outer-edge, one is explainable by a 'fixing slot' (for mounting the side-panel) in the under-edge (near the powercase) and the the right-upper case-edge, well, beats me, but it looks 'controlled', I mean, there is no greenish glow on the rest... But I'm a bit baffled, light has this 'angle of coming in' and 'coming out'...and the up-right green light seems too far away and in a difficult angle to give that edge a reflection.... But there are two things that make me think this is real.... In that first image on the second page you can see the reflections of these cables in the shiny bottom of the G5 case...and I think thats very hard to fake... And in the image to show us his arts in cutting metal, you can see the inward bending of the metal, common in cutting metal...
Hmm, feel like a forensic detective, and I'm not a PS expert, maybe I got it wrong! But I think someone should tell his parents! nono.gif

Greetz, Stef

Hmmm...looked at the last few pics (which refused to load last night, when I looked at the site) and it appears that he does indeed have two lights in there, not the one visible in the first few pics.

Jeez...if he really did put an Athlon 2200 (1.8 GHz) in there, his parents really ought to be told. Kind of like taking out the innards of a new Mercedes and replacing them with Ford econobox bits.

But back to work - or Krissel will be after me again!!  laugh.gif

Paddy - Took the liberty of putting your 'hoax' post on MacFormat forum and got this response
QUOTE
I really hope that's just a hoax. Hopefully it's just a Mac owner who stripped it out for a laugh(?!), put in a PC Board took the piccies then (hopefully) put the G5 board back into it. You'd be surprised how many Mac boards have posts like "I bought an iPod today, so I completely stripped it out to see how it works then put it back together again - here are the pictures". If that isn't one of these people, then he is truly a Sick, Sick Puppy....
.
Let's hope, eh?

Hope nobody spotted why I edited that... blush-anim-cl.gif

Naaah

I don't think a G5 owner would put a metal cutting device in his newly acquired superputer!!! Well, I wouldn't!

Hmm, I confess to having a few moments to spare and was going to go look at those pics again to review all your observations, but...

...the site is a 404 due to traffic overburdening the server.

I could not access the linked page; I keep getting a server error message.

Wouldn't it be easier to turn a G5 into a PC by just installing Virtual PC on the Mac?
