Sort of "New" 8600
« on: January 28, 2004, 09:47:33 AM »
clap.gif I got another 8600 by helping a guy I know get Linux on his new PC. He got it from a company cleaning out their systems for new ones. It had OS 8.5 and 320megs of ram with a 2gig harddrive and four megs of VRAM. It is running great but as a precaution I turn it off every night now. Iam looking to get a OS 9 cdrom, got one from eBay but it was one of the iMac ones, orange in color, but I got a refund after showing him it would not work on my machines, sent him a screen shot of the error. Just happy to get my machine back and hope to add a new OS soon. laugh.gif

That was the type I had but it was orange in color. It said it was for a iMac DV on the front. The error was it would not work on this machine and would stop until you clicked ok and it would not install. I have been looking at some 9.0.4 cds on ebay with the big 9 on it with a white back ground so I might look at those. I paid $35.00 for that cd I got but when I sent the seller the screen shot of the error and he refunded me and I sent it back to him.

jawdrop.gif You are not kidding Bernie. I was hoping for a great deal I spotted a few on eBay but most rise in price sometimes to the ones listed there or more. Maybe I will get lucky like with the computer and find a reasonable OS cdrom. getsick.gif

thumbup.gif Yes, It was one of the cards saved from the other smoking 8600. I saved the processor card the video card and the USB card. It took out the memory and video memory that I had installed. The processor card is a Sonnet G3 400mhz and I am grinning to the bank. biggrin.gif

Ok. smile.gif

Why not put that in the New 8600 and then the OWC Install Disks will work. smile.gif

smile.gif This is the machine I tried to get that one iMac cdrom to work with and gave me the error about not working on this machine. I even reformated the harddrive with the iMac cdrom and tried to install but same error, you noticed the Mac1 is formated with HFS+, that is from the iMac. I am going to get a os cdrom with the big 9 and white background (9.0.4) to make sure it will install. At one of the sites that sell Mac OS cds and they explained the problem with iMac cdroms, here is the site:

http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/macos9041.html

At least that happened with the iMac cdrom disc I got and sent back.

Christopher. Don't spend $149 You weren't were you? smile.gif

If you put the G3 in the 8600 you can use the OWC Gray CD.

I bought a "Gray CD" and installed OS 9 on my 6400 with a G3 Upgrade.

I promise you that will work. smile.gif

smile.gif cool I will condsider that if I can't find a good deal on the other OS cd's. I really like the 8600 case, easy to expand I even have this little plastic object I use to hold the case open and don't have to move the machine off my desk.
