I attempted to order this combo Firewire/USB 2.0 drive enclosure but I received a message that it is either out of stock or discontinued. I am waiting for an answer to my e-mail query about whether it is actually discontinued or not (communicating with the supplier is not very easy...)

While the ability to use either Firewire or USB 2.0 is nice, I would be happy to settle for just Firewire 400 as long as the enclosure has a Firewire port on the front. That apparently unique port would make using a spare drive much more convenient. I would also like an enclosure that can be used in a vertical position in order to save space on my desk.

Would a TSer that is more experienced in purchasing drive enclosures kindly point me to another supplier for the same or similar enclosure?

Mayo, Googling it yielded lots of sources, most waaay more expensive than the one you link to (one place wanted $140!)

Here's another one though - for a little less ($89). TigerDirect also have 2 other Compucable FireExpress enclosures, but neither appear to have front ports.

Rather than have a cable always attached to the rear of the enclosure, I would prefer to be able to easily detach a shorter cable. It is in keeping with my "minimalist" approach to computer clutter.

Finding a Firewire cable shorter than six feet has been unsuccessful; the closest I could find is this retractable cable from Macally. It should come in handy when transporting the drive.

Thanks for the various links. I was having trouble finding the desired enclosure until I figured out how it is identified by most vendors.
