S900 SuperMac questions
« on: February 02, 2003, 08:18:00 PM »
I have this S900 I brought home from work, which I am planning on letting my son play on.  My boss mentioned that it wasn't booting properly.  I am now experiencing that problem.  I have zapped the PRAM which hasn't helped.  I have pressed and held the cuda button a few seconds but still nothing.  Also tried booting from an OS 9.1 system CD by holding down C which it wouldn't boot from.  I am thinking it may be the PRAM battery.  I have never replaced one.  Can someone tell me where the PRAM battery is in the S900 SuperMac?

Also, when I do get it to boot.  I am wanting to wipe the drive and install system 9.1 which I understand will run on this computer.  Can anyone tell me if this computer will run OS 9.1 smoothly?  It has the 604e processor.

Hi. I'll pull my S900 out tomorrow and get back to you. It's veriy easy to see once the Case is opened. I replaced the 3.6V Lithium in mine right away,. Don't worry so much. Just treat it as a Mac Clone.I'll post something for you tomorrow.

Well. Until Bernie gets back to you.

Open up your machine and look for something like this.

http://eshop.macsales.com/Item_DealMac.cfm...&Item=OWCMAC36V

Is it having trouble with Time/Date settings?

You're into a different experience with that machine.

Suggest you read those links from that earlier post.

This machine was discontinued about 1997 so all later OSs are going to have some problems.

How much RAM is in the machine? Exactly which one is it?

Do you also have OS 8.0 or 8.5 on hand?

Here is information on the UMax model I am speaking of.

200mhz SuperMac

I have only had it boot for me a couple of times so not sure on date and time.

Not sure how much ram is in it.

Do not have OS 8.0 or 8.5 on hand.

Thanks for the links, kelly.  I will check 'em out.

Hope to hear from you Bernie.  I opened the side panel but couldn't find the battery.

I've been subscribed to the Unsupported list of X users for several months now and the S900 is one of the machines that is very successful at running X. In fact there is a poster this week who is very frustrated cause he seems to be the only one who can't get it to work.

Of course you would need a G3/4 card to run  Jaguar. Here's the place to sign up for the list. The archives may give you some info, too.

I finally got a day off. Just pop the S900 open. You can see the  battery and Ram slots . Go here and you can see every imaginable upgrade tor your Umax . I just popped my old 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 16 MB V card in place of the stock 8 mb Twin Turbo.    works Great!

Thanks Bernie!  I looked real close around the ram slots and located the battery.  It was partially under the floppy drive.  Also, thanks for the helpful links for upgrading.  Not sure if I will be putting that kind of money into it.  Just wanting it to run 9.1 decently.  Read somewhere there is a driver for the twin turbo graphic card that will help it work with OS 9.1.

Now, if I can only get this thing to boot from the OS 9.1 system disk.

iGuy, Bernie is, of course, again correct. Be assured your TS team is here to satisfy your evey need. And if you wish to order anything, anything at all, just use my CC number referenced above. But as you know, if it does not work, BIOB!

Thanks for Harv's CC# Bernie!  It worked great!      Since I had his card I just went ahead and bought a new dual G4.

Was playing around with the S900.  Finallly got it to boot for me.  I went straight to extensions manager and switched it to default for the system.  Was able to zap the PRAM again for good measure and was even able to get it to let me rebuild her desktop.         And boy did that take awhile.  Must not of been done in awhile.

PRAM battery is definately bad.  The date on this computer is 8/29/56 and it won't keep time.  Have to make a trip to Radio Shack this weekend.

Bernie, which system are you running on your S900?

Also, where do I go in System 7.5.5 to see how much ram is installed?
