I've noticed the same thing. I believe what's happening is that Panther does all the same startup tasks as Jaguar, but does them much, much more quickly--so fast, in fact, that it doesn't have time to update the boot screen before it's done.
On my 600MHz Icebook, at least, Panther boots
much faster than Jag.
