Modem connection speed

I have a Performa 6360 running OS 8.6 with 48 Meg of ram. My internal modem went bad so I hooked up a US Robotics 56k external modem. But I connect at only 28800 bps max. My neighbors PC is a 900 meg Processor ( or something like that ) and he connects at 46800 bps ( or close )  and his web pages load much faster than mine. I'm no puter guru so any reply's as to why the difference in speed need to be in simply explainations. This my first time using this forum so any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Yes the 2 selections that I have to choose from are ( US Robotics High Speed ) and ( US Robotics Universal ) Is there a difference? I have the US Robotics High Speed selected now

There are many reasons why you may get low modem speeds.

First try the other script, can hurt, if it doesn't work, go back to that high speed script.

Try and check your phone cords, make sure it is as short as possible to your outlet from your computer and in good shape.

If the US Robotics modem has a control panel or configurator program or from OS 8.6's modem control panel, check to see if there is a selection of settings for your connection speed and choose the highest speed possible.

Your 6360 will not be able render web pages as fast as newer computers, but the connection speed should be able to connect higher with the right settings and environment.

Last resort if all else fails would be to call your phone company and ask them to do a line check for noise on your phone line, they will tell you if your line is noisy or clear.

NascarFan. Hello. I have relatives that are big Rusty Wallace Fans.  

I recommend you pull that Internal Modem out of the machine.

That might help some. Just cover the hole with tape or something.

Disable any Control Panels or Extensions related to it.

Upgrading the RAM with two 64 MBs chips will help things.

Here are some docs from Apple to read. There are many reasons for lower connection speeds. In my personal situation there are two analog connections between my computer and the server so I am limited to 32/33 at best regardless of my modem speed.  I took my PB outside and attached it to the external phone jacks to eliminate any household interference or congestion from too many line items and still got the low speed. It's the phone company's fault.
