Ordering prints from iPhoto
« on: March 19, 2003, 10:58:00 AM »
Has anyone done this?  Is the image quality of the print only as good as the scan?  If I wanted to order an 8x10 print, should I scan my picture to fit that?  Say 300+ resolution and 400% (or more) larger?

I know I can not use any of my existing scans right now, unless I was ordering wallet sized photos.  The yellow warning symbol says so next to each option on the order page.

Thanks.
Jay

Hi Jay,

To be honest, I haven't used iPhoto, yet. I did, however, look at the submit window for ordering prints and it appears to be the same as Ofoto. Kodak owns and operates Ofoto and iPhoto. The pricing is identical at both places. I would bet that ordering prints from either place would result in good prints.

That said, here's a list of minimum requirements set by Ofoto to get the highest quality prints. The same would be true for iPhoto. One thing that will help you is, learn to think of your scans or digital images in pixel size (ppi) rather than in inches or some other measurement.

Recommended Minimum Resolutions

To get high-quality prints in variety of sizes, Ofoto recommends your photos have at least  the following minimum resolutions:
-For a wallet-size print, the image resolution should be 320 x 240 pixels minimum
-For a 4 x 6" print, the image resolution should be 640 x 480 pixels minimum
-For a 5 x 7" print, the image resolution should be 1024 x 768 pixels minimum
-For a 8 x 10" print, the image resolution should be 1536 x 1024 pixels minimum
-For a 16 x 20" print, the image resolution should be 1600 x 1200 pixels minimum
-For a 20 x 30" print, the image resolution should be 1600 x 1200 pixels minimum

(edit) Why is my post all scrutched up to one side?

Hmm... now I see that the problem with my post is caused by Safari.

Jay, in my previous post, I didn't say anything about the quality of the prints. For the most part, I have been extremely happy with the photo prints that I have ordered.

Most of the time, I get 4x6 prints for myself and 8x10 for my clients. I have purchased a few 8x10 prints for myself since I got my Nikon 990. The prints are beautiful!

I should warn you that scanned images may not come out the correct color and may be darker than you expect. Your results may differ than mine, so don't let my experience influence you negatively. Get some prints made. The 4x6 prints are cheap! You can always go back and get larger prints if you're happy with the smaller prints.

I have yet to order a BIG print like 11x14 or 16x20. That's just another thing on my looooong list of things to do, before I check out.

Thanks a lot Bruce.  I think I will order a 4x6 print and give that a shot to see how it looks.  I have 2 definite pics I want as 8x10 so what I will do is scan them using the info you gave me, order 4 prints: one print of each with no adjustments and the other 2 using iPhotos automatic "Enhance" feature.  It's worth a shot.  That way I can compare the two options for each photo.

All my pictures have to be scaned in.  The pics I want are from my trip to Europe.  I didn't have a digital camera, I had a Kodak Advantix.  But the pictures came out AWESOME!  Better than a lot of the other's in my group.

Have fun, Jay!

If you keep track of your scanning procedure and whatever color enhancements you might do before submitting your files, you can use the first trial prints as a guide to fine tune the next batch of photos you do.

Once you find the work flow that works for you, I think you'll be very happy with the prints you get.

If you are outside North America and irritated at being unable to use iPhoto album ordering, there is a UK-based campaign you can sign up to.
