Favorite internet radio stations?
« on: March 19, 2003, 11:28:00 PM »
Having finally gotten my Sawtooth upgraded with new processor, new drive and Jaguar, I have rediscovered the joys of iTunes and the various internet radio stations on offer. For the last two days I've been really enjoying "Radio IO" - www.radioio.com - found in the Alt/Modern section. It bills itself as "Intelligent, eclectic adult alternative" - and it is! Virtually no talk - the occasional mention of the fact that they're entirely listener funded and where to send money, but that's about it for interuptions in the music.

Everything from the new Johnny Cash album to XTC to Peter Gabriel. They have a library of over 21,000 titles and every day play 600 different titles...so you don't hear the same song over and over.

Last 10 songs played:

G Love And Special Sauce - Sarahs Song
Kim Richey - The Circus Song
Sondre Lerche - All Luck Ran Out
Feel - Wont Stand In Your Way
Live - Turn My Head
Rosey - Beautiful
Sheryl Crow - Mother Natures Son
Susan Tedeschi - Alone
Keb Mo - I Was Wrong
U2 - New York

So what other hidden gems have you discovered?

I drown out the noise my G4 makes with music off the internet too.

My favorite station works well with iTunes. Go to:  KEXP.org and you'll find the links for listening to streamed audio on the left side navigation bar. I chose the 96k MP3 link because I'm on a cable modem.

The music varies throughout the day. I like it because you hear music that you don't hear anywhere else.

Radio IO plays a lot of stuff you'll never hear anywhere else too - I mentioned some better known names simply to help give a bit of a feel of the sort of thing they play. However, it's extremely diverse and hard to categorize. I'll have to check out KEXP too - their playlists look interesting.

It's years since I've been able to listen to great music radio, so this has been WONDERFUL! Over the last few years I've mostly listened to NPR and our local classical station because I was so disgusted with the "popular" music offerings in the Boston area...MOR drivel, hardcore rap, and icky stuff like Britney. Blehhh...

For someone who worked for 5 years at the coolest record store in Toronto, has in the past possessed an extremely eclectic record collection (1300 titles ranging from JS Bach to Wire - now reduced to 500 CD's) it's been the equivalent of musical purgatory. Hey, kps, if you read this - is the Ryerson station (CKLN) still cool or have they gone too? CFNY was great for about 4 or 5 years, but you'd never know it to listen to them now. (I occasionally check 'em out when I'm back in Newcastle, ON - but I can't get Ryerson from there) OMG...just discovered that CFNY has a fan site - for the fans of the days when it was still a good radio station! http://www.spiritofradio.ca

It's not exactly radio. It's music without commercials. I have it on quietly at work everyday. It can be spotty. But if the music stops, I just select another "channel" until I find one that's playing. Usually that only takes one attempt, but once in a while it can take several. It doesn't cover all styles of music, so it won't fit everyone's tastes. I tune in to the classical channels.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

I was unaware of internet radio till I got iTunes, wow do they have lots of good music without commercials and without "the fuzzys", interference between FM stations that is bad around here.
I happen to love Blues, and that kind of music is not too easy to find around here, or it is on late at night.  iTunes opened up a whole new world of listening for me.  I havent done a search to find other stations, as the 9 or 10 that iTunes offers gives me plenty. I had to get new better speakers.

I'm on "Generation 80's Retro" for the moment, hehe.
Hey, does anyone know how to create an iTunes streaming anyway?
Thinking to ask my favorit radio station if they want to go on iTunes to (they are online on QuickTime and WMP)

This station requires RealPlayer, but Jack has a great, eclectic record collection so it is worth the RealPlayer hassles...I have been listening to his "station" for years.

http://www.memphiscat.com/

Currently on:  Black Uhuru- Sinsemilla
You Am I-  Hi Fi Way
Guitar Wolf- Planet Of The Wolves (Japanese punk trio...)
The Beat Generation (3 CDs worth of Beat poetry, prose and jazz.  I've been thinking of buying this boxed set so this is a great opportunity to preview it...)
Cool Jerks-Cleaned a Lot of Plates in Memphis
                    Jimi Hendrix - War Heroes
Rain Parade-Emergency 3rd Rail Power Trip/ Explosions in the Glass Palace
                     David Byrne- The Catherine Wheel

Most of the time Jack offers up entire CDs.  The Odds and Ends link has MPEG files that change frequently and include stuff that can be difficult to find.

These days I have been listening to cable music, which is pretty good.  We have wireless stereo speakers in our house, so music playing on the living room stereo can be piped anywhere.  So coool...

I want to try satellite music one of these days.  Does anyone subscribe to one of the two networks?

This is where I have finally found a use for my issued PC at work.  93.3 The Bone plays Classic Rock out of Texas, but their station will only interface with PC versions of Windows Media Player

Otherwise, I just choose one of the iTunes Classic Rock Stations.

Mayo, that's a cool site...I'm listening to the Rain Parade right now. First time in over 6 years, since I sold my vinyl collection to a collector in Portland, OR a few years before we moved here. When you realize that you only play CD's and haven't played a record in three years, it's time to make some decisions.    ...only a few I regret getting rid of, like Kimberley Rew's Bible of Bop and some of my more obscure German progressive stuff which I'll probably never be able to replace on CD, but so it goes.

Sinsemilla is next...another great record!

How often does Memphis Cat change the offerings on the web site? His play list is quite something!

I e-mailed Jack this morning and he replied that he changes the offerings every two-three weeks, depending on his mood and the weather...

I'm glad you like it.  I stumbled upon it back in '97, when it was more home-spun.  There would be a short audio file of Jack talking about what was being featured and the clip would always include a reference to his beloved cat.

The list of who has been featured in the past is pretty amazing. Jack has a nice mix of classics, rarities, unusual "I've never hear of that band/music..." recordings, and live performances.  He's a unique programmer.

I need to get a phono preamp for my Outlaw receiver.  Many of the current receivers no longer have phono preamps because turntables are becoming so rare.  I spent $500-$600 on a Kyocera turntable back when CDs were just coming on big-time, but it has been idle since my beloved Technics reveiver Bit The Dust after twenty well-used years.  May it RIP.
