can\'t boot off of burned cd with Systems on it
« on: February 05, 2003, 02:47:00 PM »
I have a burned cd with OS 9.1 and 9.2.2 on it.  When I go to Startup control panel when booted on my OS9 partition, I cannot choose the 9.2.2 system on the cd to boot off of.  When I'm booted into OSX, I go to the Startup in System Preferences, I can choose either 9.1 or 9.2.2,  Is there any reason why I can't boot off the cd when booted from my OS9 partition?

When you burn the CD you have to choose the option to make the CD bootable, otherwise the system folder does not get "blessed" and you can not boot off of the CD. There is no way to fix that now and have the CD bootable.

Okay, I understand all that part- that makes sense, but tell me this:  I hooked up my external FW drive which I used as a boot drive in OS9 for maintenance, and for some reason, when I choose it in Startup Disk in OSX, it lets me choose the drive, but it won't boot off the FW drive.  I now have to boot back into my OS9 partition and then go to Startup Control Panel in 9 to do it.  Why won't X let me boot off my FW drive?

What OS do you want to boot into on the firewire drive? If it's OS X, how did you install it on the drive...regular install off the CD, CarbonCopy Cloner or a 'drag & drop' to the disk?

Could be a drive issue as well. I have a no-name brand FW drive (an IBM Deskstar in a FW enclosure) and it works very well. I have no problem booting off of that drive into OS X. The OS on this drive was installed off of the original Jag CD.

I only have OS9 on the FW drive.  So, for some reason, I can boot from 9 to 9, but not x to 9.

Okay, so OS X Startup Disk panel sees the drive and the OS 9 system folder as bootable, but when selected and you restart it doesn't boot into that OS 9, instead it boots into...what?...OS X again?

Try this: startup with the option key down, if the FW os9 shows up as a choise, select it and see if it boots.

kps- I'll make a note of that.  I'm not connected to the drive at the moment.  Thanks.
