Got a problem with a USB Intellimouse.

Installed 9.1 and I still can't seem to get this mouse to work.

I've installed the Intellipoint 4.1 software and the extensions are loading up (the ones that were noted in the install) and yet I can't seem to use it.

Any ideas?

Thanks, all.

Have a great Sunday.

Man, what a glorious day.

Chris, have you tried USB OverDrive ?

I use it on my contour UniMouse . Works great in 9 and X.

Not sure if it will with the intellimouse. Doesn't hurt to check it out.

Bill -

USB Overdrive didn't seem to do any good for it.

ASP shows the card recognized and identifies the mouse correctly (shows a Microsoft 3-button mouse with IntelliEye).

This is weird.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, are you sure you've got the right drivers there?

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/7040

4.1 is for Windows. But if the drivers installed, they gotta be the Mac version!

Does the mouse work at all? It should work without the software - the scroll wheel and various features won't work, but it should work as a basic mouse without software. When I got Jaguar installed on my Sawtooth last week it took me a few days to get around to installing the MS software - mouse worked fine though, other than the lack of scroll wheel.

Try plugging and unplugging. Sometimes this works. I assume that you've also downloaded the latest USB software from Apple (I take it you're using a third party USB card)?

cdub1988,

As Paddy said, the Apple USB card Support 1.4.1 document and software is at http//docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31132.

Yep. It's straight from the installer CD.

The installer copies four files: two extensions, one control panel and a help file.

Exactly.

Nope. Won't even move the cursor. Light on the bottom of the mouse stays lit (but consequently, I think it does all the time, if memory serves, and lights more when it's in use)

Done it. Didn't change.

I've also got a MacAlly combo card in this box and swapped the mouse into an open port on that card and same result.

Yep.

Frustrated.

Bad mouse? Can you try another one?

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking.

I'm a little frustrated, because this is the second mouse (the first, consequently, was just a cheap one that didn't work well anyways - it worked fine, just didn't like it).

But, I had it working on the old 6500, which is why I'm so frustrated.

Chris, two things to try - some other USB item on the USB cards, to make sure that they work, and if you can rule them out, try the mouse on another computer to rule it out. We know the mouse is getting power - since it lights up - so something is happening at least.

If both PCI cards and the mouse work in other circumstances, then there is something particular to your setup & this combination that is causing the problem. Maybe a bit more info will help - which Mac are you using?

Did that. Have a Canon USB scanner. Works fine.

8500
OS 9.1
336MB (Methinks, not sure - not at the box right now)
4GB
MacAlly combo card
Asante 10/100 Fast Ethernet
Belkin 2-port USB expansion card
CanoScan N670 USB scanner (Methinks that's the model number)
HP LaserJet 2100M
ADSL access (SW Bell)
Running a slew of apps including DynDNS client, SIMS, EnterNet (for DSL access), and soon to be MacHTTP 2.5.1.

Hope that helps clarify.

Thanks, all.

Take care.

Chris

P.S. - Hey Kelly, I downloaded that 2.3 installer and it copies nearly the same files (it has one more than the 4.1 installer) , but the file look to be the same exact thing.

Weird.

cdub,

I've got an intellimouse running on my 7500/8500 G3 FrankenMac.

My USB is via a "CompUSA" brand card.

I seem to recall that there are a few USB "extensions" that have to be running for the mouse to work. Apart from the ones that enable it to work with your scanner.

Have you checked to make sure any extension with USB in the name is active?

Another possiblity is the scanner could "physically" be causing the problem. But I suppose you've done that.

However, there could be a scanner driver that is.

Maybe booting with the default "Full OS 9" extension set might be a start. Then try turning on the intellimouse ones.

Good luck.

Chris , I have a 5 button Intellimouse and have the following files (not all needed but they are there) :

Microsoft Mouse control panel (application) version 2.0
USB Device Extension
USB Mass Storage Support
USB Printer Sharing Extension
USB Software Locator
USB Support
USB2IDEDriver
USB2IDEShim
USBAppleMonitorModule
USBClarity

Toss these prefs:
IntelliPoint Mouse Prefs
IntelliPoint Prefs
Mouse Prefs

OO, OO, just thought of something...could this be one of the Microsoft mice that was subject to "recall" or actually free replacement? I think the offer is over now but maybe it was one of the faulty ones???
This is from a notice last June but the 90 day period for contact is over.

quote:
Microsoft has received reports that a small percentage of IntelliMouse® Explorer, IntelliMouse Optical and Wheel Mouse Optical mouse products have stopped working or have begun to work intermittently after a period of normal use. Symptoms of this condition may include the cursor not moving, mouse buttons not responding or the red tail-light not illuminating. It is also possible that this condition may cause the computer or an open program to stop responding (hang) during or immediately following mouse movements.
If you have questions, you may call 866-542-3065

Don't know if they are still honoring this but worth a try if all else fails.

Krissel -

Thanks for the reply.

I actually took the mouse back to CompUSA last night and decided to try a different vendor.

Big mistake.

Got a Memorex one that said it was supposed to work with Mac OS 9.x and yet had no software to go with it.

The mouse responded to movement (the scroll wheel lights when moved), so it was definitely powered, but it would not work either.

I suspect it's because of the lack of drivers to use for it.

I tried USB Overdrive, but quite honestly, couldn't see that it helped anything.

Oh well. Guess I won't get to use an optical after all.

Bummer.

Thanks for the tips, all.

Take care.
