The one with the 8 MB Cache.

"newegg.com offers the Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80GB EIDE UltraATA/100 7200 rpm hard drive with 8MB cache, model no. WD800JB, for $98 with free shipping. It's the first time we've seen this drive under $100 shipped, excluding rebates."

When I checked on the weekend, NewEgg also had the WD 120GB SE for $136, shipped free, no rebates, which dollar for GB is a little cheaper. It's the drive I now have as my main drive in the Sawtooth and it's great. Very quiet too.

Can I use the 120GB, or 80GB in my eMac?  Is there any other way to use them as drives, I don't need the space now, but my DV projects are HUGE, and will need it after 1 more video.  (or 2 episodes of The Simpsons captured with my VideoBus II)

Peace-
Peter

Peter, you should be able to install either of these drives in your eMac. I don't know what the eMacs are like to work on, but if they're anything like an iMac, they're not exactly fun. Everything is packed in pretty tightly and putting a new drive in an iMac requires a lot of disassembly. With the aid of a good take-apart (there are some for iMacs, haven't looked online for the eMac) you should be able to do it though.

The other alternative to consider is installing one of these drives in an external Firewire case, such as the ones that OWC sell.

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm...tle=&Template=1

Whether you save much by doing this rather than buying a Firewire drive already assembled (and they are just ATA drives in Firewire cases, BTW) depends on the case and drive you choose. If you went with a 120GB WD SE at $136, and bought an OWC Mercury Elite Pro at $99.95, you will only save $24 over the OWC Firewire drive with similar specs(120GB, 8MB cache). Still...$24 is $24. Installing a drive in a Firewire case should be really easy, if my experience with external SCSI drives is anything to go by.

Peter. You can almost certainly use the 120 Gig.

What you need is a an External Firewire Hard Drive.

Either pre-made or buy a Drive and Case seperately.

Put your present Drive in it or the new Drive.

Examples. You can usually find deals on them.

I cant recommend a firewire HD setup, as least if you are expecting to have something that acts a real hard drive.
My firewire drive acts like a big zip drive, meaning everything has to be copied to it, instead of just being placed there as you would with a real HD. This can take 15-20 minutes or more for big files, which are what one would buy it for.
Also Firewire HDs are shaky. You keep hearing about how FW is hot-swappable. HaH. Try turning off a FWHD without first dismounting its icon (trashing it) and you are in for a lot of trouble. You've probably corrupted the drive and ruined your files, even if at first the drive doesnt act that way. So whatever you do, dont get one that looks just like the CD burner you're always turning off and on!
And if your Mac has a system freeze while the drive is mounted, it's the same as if you had turned it off without dismounting it.
In fact today i restarted my BWG3 under OSX and it warned me i had not dismounted the drive. Then the drive did not mount right away. I fear the worst, which is usually the right approach with this thing.
I would say do whatever you can to replace the drive in your computer and use an external only if all else fails.

Meanwhile, can i use the 120 WD mentioned above in my BWG3? I think im going to make a  planter of the FW.

Peter. hingyfan has had a horrible experience with his.

Many thousands of other people have had better luck.

Really the only way to add drives to some machines.

Especially useful for imac and Powerbook Video editing.

Check through some of the reports here.

hingyfan. Have you sent them a Report of your problems?

The fact that things are copied to an External Drive

is just the way it is for multiple Drives.

Even if they're both Internal.

I believe  Firewire and Internal speeds are comparable.

Had problems last night (it inferred with my new burner!) buy OSx utility fixed them. with OSX i have much more confidence in the drive because the system  is not prone to full freezes. Previously that was always a posibility and it would doom a FWHD, anyone, not just mine.
My point is having an external HD is not at all like having a bigger real one.
