One question. This may sound like a stupid question but you know, I've never owned a tower before.
I have limited space in this house. Where do you who have towers put them? On top of a desk, under the desk, on the floor? I'm trying to set up a workspace and bought this nice Amish solid oak computer desk but it's 28" wide with a slide out keyboard thingy. With the 19" monitor on there there isn't alot of room. I kind of dislike keeping the tower on the floor because it's going to collect more dust than it should. Might have to build something to stand it on.

To me, desk area is "prime" real estate. Even though I use a corner desk with lots of space, my tower is under the desk.

A friend of mine has a desk with cabinet to one side. Her tower is inside the cabinet and all the wiring goes out a hole in the back.

I have considered building an enclosure for my desk so I can put the tower inside. If the fan replacement kit that Apple is sending out doesn't take care of the noise, I still might try the enclosure.

Gary, I have one of those risers Kelly referenced.   As I recall, he first alerted me to that link and I am glad that he did.  

According to the mfgr's hype:
Raises the G3/G4 Mini-tower approx. four inches

Gary , mine is in a slot in my desk...just off the floor about an inch. However; the riser  Kelly , talked of..is a great solution!

I built small platforms (two and three inches tall) for the PMs.
Just enough hight to stay off the carpet.
Like you and others have stated,-what room-?
The monitors in either set up take up a lot of space. Not to mention all the other do-hickies ya pick up down the road.

The riser is a good idea.
I didn't have one so I used an old wooden biscuit board under the desk just to keep the tower from resting directly on the carpet.The biscuit board was wide enough to also hold the surge protector with all its cords coming out.

The riser is nice but I just went and bought a 24"x10" piece of oak particle board that should do nicely....$2.49.    Cheap too.

Hey, i might get that riser!  My B&W is on my desk for easy access to the innerts.  But it also resides next to my scanner and to open the B&W I have to move the scanner out of the way.  With that riser, it would make my B&W clear my scanner...    

My beige tower is on the ground under the other desk.

Well, mine's directly on the hardwood floor, under the table next to my desk (not a lot of leeway with cables there...) My desk has drawers on both sides,that only leave about a foot of clearance below, so putting it under the desk isn't an option. With a 22" monitor and shelving around the monitor AND a stack of those plastic paper trays holding my cable modem, router, print server, ethernet 5 port switch, zip drive and CDRW, ON the desk, putting it on the desk wasn't an option either. The table next to the desk has a scanner, inkjet printer, 17" monitor for the PC, so putting it ON that table isn't an option either. It does collect dust - I guess I could elevate it and see if that helps. However, I'm not sure that it collects all that much more dust than the G3 which sits up on a desk - they both get pretty disgusting on a regular basis. Of course, I've never claimed to be Martha Stewart!    And I'm sure Martha would be horrified at the plastic paper tray "shelf"...but hey...it works, until such time as I have the TIME to make something prettier!

I'm glad you replied. I never thought of you as the Martha Stewart type but some of your posts about networking and how you had a bunch of computers hooked up with a cable on the floor etc., i figured I'd follow your lead!

I use mine to extend the range of my D-Link wireless router...    

Short cables...I hate short cables...they made me put my poor G4 on top. I need a long VGA cable and I don't trust the cheapo cables from some of the large chains.

My 9600 is on the floor under a flip-up table that holds the SCSI scanner and external HD. Need it to be within easy reach for access to CD-Rom, internal zip and (gasp) floppy drive. My card reader and USB hub sits on top.
Also needs to be within cable range of the two monitors and short SCSI cable to external burner.

Only oddity is that since it is a vinyl floor, I have a piece of cardboard under the unit so I can easily slide the tower out to an open space when I need to get inside. This old baby is about 35 lbs and doesn't have any handles so it's hard to move easily.
