Can\'t see blank CD on desktop
« on: April 01, 2003, 05:23:00 PM »
Hello,
Now I have a new problem... I can't see the icon for a blank CD on my desktop. Also the blank CD doesn't show up anywhere in my system preferences. I do get a window that says" you inserted a blank CD. Choose what to do..." and Action: Open Finder, Name: Untitled. But then I press ok and... nothing. No CD anywhere to be found! I have no problems viewing a CD if there is already something on it, but if there is nothing on it, it's invisible. This just started happening recently... it worked fine before, and I was able to burn CDs with no problems.
Any ideas?

What are you using to burn the CDs? Which system are you running?

I never see blank CDs, period. Toast will acknowledge a blank has been inserted for burning but that is all. My CD-Rom will show nothing on the desktop if the CD is unwritten.

Please explain what you used to do successfully, and how.

Hello Krissel,
I am running a powermac G4, dual processor with OSX (10.2) and OS9 installed. Before, a blank CD icon would appear on my desktop when I inserted a blank CD into the CD drive. Then I would just drag and drop files onto that blank CD icon. I would then drag the icon to the trash to "burn" the CD. It was that simple. But now the CD icon is nowhere to be found, and my system doesn't seem to recognize that there is a blank CD in the CD drive.

thanks-
Sarah

Sarah,

If you are having this problem in OS 10.xx, go to the Menu bar / Finder / Preferences / "Show these items on the Desktop" and see if "Removable media (such as CDs)" is checked.

I did just add on an external hard drive... do you think it could have something to do with that? But the CD icon still doesn't show when the external hard drive is turned off...

Try repair permissions with Disk Utilities. If that doesn't work it might be a corrupt preferences file. A reboot can also fix some problems if you haven't rebooted in a while.

It does work in OS9. I can see the CD icon on my desktop and I can burn CDs from OS9, just not OS10.

I did run the disk utility, and also TechTool Deluxe, on it last night... still nothing this a.m. in OS 10.

Haven't tried trashing the preferences yet... do you know where I find that file or what it's called?

thanks--

Sarah. What do you have your CD Preferences set to do?

System Preferences > CDs and DVDs >

"When You Insert a Blank CD"

Hi Sarah!

Funny, I had something similar happen to me last night - but solved it by going to the system preferences and rechecking things. For "when you insert Blank CD" - select "open finder". However, from what you've said, you may have that setting already correct. A couple of postings at the Apple discussion mention similar problems. One suggestion:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?14@....16@.3bc0a0ad/1

And if you want to try deleting the preferences, go to: user/(you)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.digihub.plist and trash that. You could also try trashing the com.apple.finder.plist, though you may have to reset a bunch of finder related preferences afterwards (or just drag it to the desktop and restart the finder - if it isn't cured with a new set, put the old one back and save yourself the bother of redoing everything).

I'd try the preference trashing first - then if that doesn't work, the steps described in the Apple discussion posting.

I continue to be somewhat suspicious of that new Mac of yours...particularly as John's has exhibited none of this screwy behavior. You still haven't erased your HD and reinstalled X, have you?

Thanks Paddy!
Nope I haven't erased my HD yet... I'm scared to! I know I have to do it though, although things seem to be working better now, and I the last time I ran TechTool Deluxe, it passed!!!!!
