Ebay Account hijacked.....
« on: April 05, 2003, 08:29:00 PM »
I was away for a couple of days and got home today to several e-mails from Ebay indicating that I had requested changes to my Ebay email address and password.            Also to an number of 'listing' confirmations

When I looked at my account I fine that SOMEONE has 5 PCs listed for sale under my accound ID.

I've tried to change my id password but they beat me to it so now I can't even get at my account to lock it up or end the auctions early... .

I've contacted Ebay SafeHarbor fraud area...GOD I HATE DOING THIS BY E-MAIL..... I wish they had a PHONE # to get this cleared up quicker...  "We will be back to you with an answer in 24 to 72 hours" Lovely, while some joker racks up charges against my account and some one else buys the computer(s) and looses their money and expects me to deliver.

I have saved all the e-mails I received about this from Ebay, but I'm sure it will take much time and hassle to get it corrected.

The JERKS started by requesting a change to my email address and then requested a change to the password mailed to the new address.....

Becareful of buying from QUONSETGOLD on Ebay....

One of our TS legal eagles should say if that isn't some kind of Federal offense that ought to be reported.

Spooky AND scary!

Now I'm more paranoid than before. I'm afraid we're going to see a lot more of this sort of thing.

E-bay has my account 'shutdown' right now and will be restoring it to me as soon as they complete their investigation.

Hijacker sold 13 of those PEE-CEEs @ $750 a crack over 2 days

E-bay CS support tells me that it probably started with them 'hacking' my e-mail account.... So I have gotten the password to that changed.  They also 'suggested' that I get fire-wall software to protect my 'always-on' DSL account/computer.

Can my account/computer be 'hacked' while I am on it and surfing, emailing, etc,etc...???

Can anyone suggest something for me to use???  CHEAP     is the operative word.

Looks like maybe I am on the way to 'recovery'....

TIA,  BOb K.

Hi Bob,

Yes, you can be hacked while you're sitting at your computer surfing...or up for a sec getting a drink...it takes very little time.

Everyone needs a firewall of some sort. The OS your running will help determine what is necessary, but here is a link to get you started:

 Firewall Guide

Even those on dialup are vulnerable without some protection.  I have been hacked over dialup so there is no safety in the belief that your dialup IP won't be found and any openings provided by your computer will be used against you.

Paddy's mention in another thread about why ATTBI is blacklisted by spam watchdogs is ..I believe..very closely related to these hackers. The professional spammers have become hackers because my server's logs show continuous attempts to relay spam through it from ATTBI DSL ..(and many other companies DSL/Cable) connections. Everyone knows that DSL isn't cheap, and all the big services have Terms of Service that make sending SPAM cause for account closure....but, hackers don't care if they cause you to lose your account. They don't sign up for DSL...they just hack any of the thousands of vulnerable machines and use them until they are shut down.

I could get on that proverbial soapbox, but I'll spare everyone this one.     I'll just go spit some nails into that fence that needs repair.

FIREWALL PEOPLE - FIREWALL

It's not paranoia if they're really out to get ya

A reasonable, but not guaranteed, check of how secures your system is and how effective your firewall protection may be can be ascertained at

"E-bay CS support tells me that it probably started with them 'hacking' my e-mail account...."

That is not likely. The way people hack PayPal and eBay accounts is usually much different.

It starts when you receive an official-looking email that says it is from: security@ebay.com or from:security@paypal.com or something like that. The email has official-looking legalese and copyright notices on it, and it says something to the effect of "Because of a security problem, we need to validate your user information. Please click on this link and answer the security questions."

When you click on the link, you go to an official-looking Web site that has the eBay graphics and copyright notices and looks 100% identical to the eBay login screen, and asks you for your account name and password.

The instant you type them in, you're doomed. The email is fake; the site is fake; when you enter your username and password, it gets emailed to the hacker.

eBay and PayPal could easily take protective action that would help prevent this scam, but they don't want to.

Why?

Because they make money from the scam. A LOT of money. Millions of dollars, in fact.

Here is how eBay and PayPal profit from the scam:

Suppose you are a buyer. Your account gets hijacked, and used to buy goods online. The seller receives the money, and sends the goods. Then you complain: "I did not make this purchase!" eBay takes the money back from the seller (**WITHOUT** notifying the seller in advance!), and also takes a "chargeback fee". eBay gives you your money back, but keeps its fees.

The police are usually unwilling to investigate this kind of fraud; it's considered a very low priority forthem. Often, they won't even bother to file a complaint.

This happened to a friend of mine; a fraudulent transaction was made using a hacked account to buy hundreds of dollars' worth of goods from him. The real owner complained, the money was yanked out of my friend's bank acocunt without notification, and eBay refused to answer questions about why.

The police refused to take action. My friend actually had to track down the criminal, using the shipping address the goods were delivered to (which was the criminal's aunt's house), and supply the police with the criminal's address and proof that the criminal had hacked an eay account before they would take action.

The criminal got six months' probation. My friend never got his money back. eBay made a profit.

That  REALLY sucks, Tacit!  Makes one wonder how anyone can keep from being cynical, these days. . .Having been fleeced once for $1800 (by a guy whose been moving across the country for the last 10 years, and who the FBI is still looking for), I feel for your friend.  I decided that I would NOT harbor a mistrust for people for the rest of my life, but I think I'm a little more cautious than I was 5 years ago. . .Loss of "innocense" is something to be mourned.

Well as of now I have my Ebay 'spot' back under the original management.
Ebay CSsupport was good to their word about the lenght of time and getting me back to before the 'hijacking'
Not that I will be selling/buying anything soon other than maybe a Belkin router so I have a firewall.  Will probably go that route rather than the software route as it won't require processor cycles to do the same thing.

Thanks to all who provided responses and advice.
