Problem PDF files
« on: February 04, 2003, 09:50:00 AM »
On my business partition this file gave me a PDF error message, so I moved to another partition Using Explorer 5 and  Acrobat™ Reader 4.0 and OS9.2.

When attempting to access this file, the first attempt allowed me to view it, but consequent attempt stalled the browser. I wanted to save the document to view in the  partition that was unable to access the file at first try, couldn’t save.

I can go to the front page  http://www.jchs.harvard.edu/  open any file in "Latest Releases" and see it, but once opened I can’t return?

http://www.jchs.harvard.edu/publications/s...3-1_schuetz.pdf

I do have Print to PDF, only it doesn’t work from chooser now, I’m forced to use the menu bar in Explorer. PDF documents seem alien to this process, I never look forward to them at all.

Back to the problem, maybe someone could try to access this file to see if the problem is with the document and not my preferences? Please?

I tried it in Netscape 4.7 and it didn't open but went directly to downloading the file, which works for me. I've never been a big fan of Browser viewing PDF's, it's faster, but seems to have problems and less control.

Just saw this, SB. Tried the main site and the first report in Latest Releases.

Got pdfs (immediately) in each, as you too found to be the case . . . I think.

Want me to try anything else?

(I'll be out for 2-3 hours beginning at 12:30p EST)

Thanks Dick, I guess the problem is with MS Internet Explorer extension or Internet preferences, I trashed all the adobe + pdf preferences. So.... I’m going to need to work on them when I get some time.....?

Sandman -

FWIW, when I clicked on the first link under New Releases, I got a new blank browser window (this is with IE 5.1 and OS 9.1), but when I opened the Download Manager window, there it was, comin' down the cable!

In a few more secs it was done and it automagically opened nice and clean in AcroReader 5 (not the browser plugin), which, as you mentioned, is just fine by me 'cause often enough the plugin does not work as well as the standalone reader app.

Your glitch could also maybe have its source in the IE's Helper Apps configuration settings...?

SB,I just opened the first one in "latest Releases" [which so happens to be your second link] in IE/9.2.2. I'm not to fond of browser viewing pdfs either. So I have my IE's helper apps set up to download.
Downloaded fine and opened right up with AR 5.

I'm with the others on disliking pdfs opening while online. Once I installed Acrobat (the application) it has taken over opening these files while in IE. I have tried several times to disable this feature only to have it return. I think it also has caused a few crashes.

I prefer to download then open offline. Now I have to remember to do it via contextual menu.

Thanks folks, the first time I clicked on the file (any) they would appear in the browser format, I could neither print to PDF or save the file as a PDF, when I returned to the file again the browser just blanked out. No download manager activity. I quest it doesn’t like repeat performances?

I to would like to get this settled once and for all, just go back to the old way of click to open application separately.

In my helper files I have three applications.
I thought that “viewer” might be the culprit and so I shut it off, but that might not be right.

PDF viewer

acrobat 4

acrobat forms and data format

So who N o s e how to... get back, get baaaack, get back to where I once belonged?

Hey Kbear, are you into Acid Jazz?
I lost a tape a few years back and found it today, not in good shape, most likely will replace with a CD, but it was a great tape by HeavyShift, called 90 degrees in the shade. Ever heard it? No vocals, kinda like Acoustic Alcamy and the Rippingtons together. Good stuff. ;-)

Not much into Jazz, but Acid, that's another story...

Seriously, never was into any acid jazz, I like my jazz on the more traditional side, guys like Dexter Gordon, Joe Pass, Lionel Hampton, Oscar Peterson, Horace Silver.

I'm not even into Coltrane, although I can appreciate his mastery.

I'm much more into melodic music - are you familiar with Flim and the BBs?  I like to call their stuff 'melodic jazz with a rock'n'roll heart.'

Well Melodic Music has a lot of ground to cover.
http://www.melodic.net/

Film & the BBs, like Tricycle, or movie sound tracks?

Acid Jazz (new term) is like heavy keyboard, percussion, fusion, mushrooming through the purple haze. Rhythmic, but not enough base to wiggle a window pane. It’s not at disco speed but somewhere in the crossroads. 90 degrees moves like something the Who would do, or Floyd,  a jazz Ballard without language. What’s strange is how it moves, smoothly it pushes and tugs with an odd assortment of instruments. I got into (fusion) which is what we called it back in the 80’s with Grace Jones, Shadowfax and Spyro Gyra, and as time went on some folks brought it to new heights.

Well anywho, how do I get my browser to just download the PDF’s without it viewing the document first? anyone?

This may work...

--Go to IE's Preferences
--File Helpers
--scroll till you find PDF
--highlight that line by clicking on it
--click the change button
--in the "change" window go to HANDLING
--choose "Save to File" from the choices given.

EDIT: p.s. picked up an unusual album the other day called "Mushroom Jazz 4" by dj Mark Farina (OM Records) pretty interesting kind of electronic jazz mix...

Thanks KPS,
I went there yesterday and found three apps.

PDF viewer
acrobat 4
acrobat forms and data format

figured the viewer is the one needing attention so I changed it to view by application but nothing was any different today. Just now I went in there and changed them all, I’ll check them tomorrow to see if that does it.

I’ll check out Mushroom Jazz 4 when I’m down at the local head shop replacing my Heavyshift tape, hopefully they have a CD? It’s one of those things where every once in a blue moon you catch a Heavyshift toon on the radio and go hunting for that lost tape, give up till the next time, knowing that if you buy a new one the old one will appear, so you procrastinate until you finally find it stuck in the crack of your truck seat with teeth marks in it.      Then the choice is clear.

Try and listen to the CD first, if you can. It's one long mix and the music is classified as "electronica" even though it has a 'jazzy' beat. I 'm always on the look out for some rather unusual instrumental stuff to use in my videos for  music tracks.

I had a similar problem with OS 9.2 and PDF downloads.  My problem seem to go away (mysteriously) after I went into the Control Panel and arrowed down to "Software Updates" and as I mentioned on a previous post - - - < It's the first time I ever done it > - - - all PDF downloads seem to work fine.

As I also previousely mentioned, it did not show me (normal file xmit download view), as it was happening.  I did get a slew of files titled "Carbon Lib" - whatever they are.  The good news is - No PDF problems with 9.2 anymore.
