Waiting 4 Panther b4 installing 40Gb disk?
« on: April 08, 2003, 11:15:00 PM »
Hey everyone
I know, a year and a half ago, i first mentioned of changing my internal disk.
As from them, i got to think to maybe buy a new computer instead, but due to things that have been happening since than... i can't
So, now i dig up the thought again of installing a new harddrive, which doesn't really scare me off anymore (after all thoughts, sugestions and help i found online).
Also, i can get a 40Gb Maxtor or Western Digital for something more than ?82 through a contact from work (little store where the companie mostly buys it's parts).
This is really cheap in Belgium where the average price of a 40Gb harddisk start arround double.

But my real thought is, should i wait for Panther to do it?
I wanna reinstall my iMac anyway, and loose the partitions as i learned OsX best works without them.
Also, will Panther change dramaticly in speed on my iMac?
In other words... are there words out for Panther's performance anyway?
If so, and if i can run it at same result as Jaguar now, i would buy Panther and harddisk and do it all together.

Than... i just needs good prayers and hope i won't ruin the mac, lol

M_B. IMO. Go ahead and install the Hard Drive.

If you are still using the original it should help things.

As far as I know, no one knows much about Panther.

I don't expect it would run better than Jaguar on your machine.

But who knows?

Partitiion or not.

It's a matter of preference.

I've seen nothing that says it affects performance.

I have found this information on the macattorney website.

[qb]Why is partitioning a bad idea? Because OS X likes to grab a significant amount of free hard drive space for caches, virtual memory, scratch space, etc. OS 9 (Classic) likes to do this to some extent also. And not only do they like free space, but they like contiguous free space. (That is, the free space must be in one unbroken chunk, not strewn about in pieces on your drive.)[qb]

I found more interesting things on that website, and also found the little freeware MacJanitor there.

Let me know what you think about it

That means it wants to have say 1 Gig of contiguous free space.

You will certainly have this on a large drive wether it is Partitioned or not.

It would have a problem if you only have a few hundred MBs free.

Actually.

The only increase in performance i've seen is setting up a seperate Partition for VM.

"Moving the swap file to a faster, secondary drive can increase your performance (by as much as 20 percent, depending on the speed of your drive). When you move the swap file, move it to the first partition of your secondary drive. "

Hahaha.... OsX.3 called Garfield.... that would be fun
Gosh, i used to a huge fan from Garfield

That "swap" file does look interesting, but i guess it won't help much on my system.
As i'm on an iMac that can only carry one drive.
Even if it doesn't really mather about the partitions, i do feel the speedbump of a 7200 rpm drive will give a difference.
I installed such a drive at work, in a B/W G3 and the difference is really noticable.
Besides that.... i wanna have a bigger drive, lol (wanna start storing my albums on my mac, get my iSub connected again and listen to my cd's on my puter).
I added the second link you gave straight to my bookmarks... looks very helpfull if i need some information about system.
