Ethernet help wanted
« on: March 28, 2003, 08:49:00 AM »
To all,
as a novice wirh A/M's (please correct me if I'm wrong) having a G4 mirrored doors and a beige Gr3 can i simply connect them using a ethernet crossover cable ?.
I am assuming that both machines have inbuilt ethernet facilities or do I need specific software to be installed that each machine will recognise each other?
George

You should have everything you need but the Cable George.

Some differences if you're mixing in OS X.

And it will need to be a Crossover Cable.

If both machines were newer it wouldn't have to be.

Check the links kelly gave you but also Apple Help in your menu. But the most common 'error' in any networking seems to be the sometimes unintuitive action of actually having something to share. Not sure what OS you're using but in 9 (and below) you must select a file, folder, or disk to share. It is so simple that it is often overlooked. Just do a Get Info on what you want to share (on each machines) and select "Sharing" in the popup list. When that is done, you should be able to see something on your network, after all the appropriate settings are completed (mainly setting Appletalk to use Ethernet and selecting passwords for every machine [write those down!]).

Hope that helps, but you probably already did all that!

Hi Gary S,
My whiz kid of a nephew (45) is making up the ethernet cable which should arrive in the post in a couple of days, I'll let you know when and if it's up and running.
My thanks again.
George.

Is he a Pro George?

Easy to mess these up.

The average person will just spend the $10 or less.

I suggest people Bookmark this Thread.

All those Knowledge Base Numbers don't make very helpful links on their own.

Hi fellas, my ethernet cable arrived sooner than expected.
I hooked up both machines (having identified both addresses) but an error message keeps coming up on both screens which is identified as error 5000.
Can anyone advise?
George

quote:
From Apples KnowledgeBase:
Why do I get an error -5000 or "File or volume access denied" message?

Answer: An application may be attempting to copy a file that's located in a write-only folder. You will have to either see if it is the application not using proper read and write procedures in its activities or the folder's access privileges need to be set to read and write.

This may go back to the point about setting something/anything on each machine as 'shared.'

Have you done that very important first step? (even though this says the error is -5000 not +5000, could it be the one you are getting?)

Second, did you check the cable against the wiring diagram posted earier?

Again George. Unless your nephew is a Pro, it's easy to make a mistake.

Here's a better description.

http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/...able/cable6.htm

Really, one end should be TIA 568A and the other TIA 568B.

Don't know if the Cable is your problem but it could be.

Things have moved on a pace in that this morning my new g4 power unit replacement (courtesy of Apple) arrived. The store where I bought the machine arranged for an Apple techie to arrive later in the day to fit the new unit (free of charge) and it now runs beautifully and much quieter.
To cap it all the techie (such a nice chap) realised that I was out of my depth with macs that he set up my G4 + G3 ethernet AND managed to setup my OS 10.2.3 to run my newly installed broadband ( also free of charge) well his wallet was slightly heavier on his way out of my house.
Who says there are no Guardian Angels?
George.
