I know, read it yesterday....
Rumours go that it has to do with the iPOD 2 and cause Apple is planning to launch some kind of online music database  
Listen to a tune for 30 seconds, than you can buy it and download it if you want.

Personally... i think Apple shouldn't let them self concern with the music industry itself... but that's my thought

The only reason I see for Apple to buy Universal Music is to avoid copyright issues when/if their music download service via iTunes is released.
However, I find $6 billion a bit too much just to avoid copyright issues...
