Newer macs have v.92 Modems

I did not know this.

You need to have an ISP that supports the v.92 Standard.

Modems Reported as V.90 Instead of V.92

OWCs ISP has v.92

" V.92 allows the negotiation of a connection in just a couple seconds so you can be online and surfing in under 10 seconds from the time the modem dials. This is a significant improvement over the 30-60 seconds v.90 and older modems typically take to do the same. V.92 also lets you put your connection on hold to take a call, viewing the call waiting prior to doing so at your choice. Nice update to an aging technology."

Although I knew that the new Macs featured the v.92 modems, I didn't know what advantage the new modems had.

Thanks for the info, kelly.

Hate to rain on your parade.....but.....

The V92 protocol modems aren't all that specatular. I work for an isp and more calls than none are in regards to unstable connections or odd errors involving a V92 modem.

We actually tested a V92 for use with our ISP, and found them to be less than what we expected in performance and reliability.

I am not saying that they are horrible, but they sure could stand some room for improvement in my opinion.

Maybe in the bigger cities with fiber-optic phone lines they are just fabulous, but out here in our neck of the woods (rural area in Ohio)  with old copper lines, just a nightmare.

Just my opinion, but before you decide to go V92, do some research, see what other users of a V92 have to say.

thanks,
Marie

Well Marie. If I'm ever in the boonies of Ohio I'll keep that in mind.

My ISP doesn't seem to support it yet.

In any case, it would just be a 3 second change of Modem Scripts.
