9.2 upgrade

Is there any good reason to upgrade from 9.1 to 9.2? I think I read somewhere that 9.2 offered no improvements over 9.1 unless you were going to X. Is that true?

I've read the same thing(s). And some even imply that 9.2 is less stable than 9.1. I've decided to skip it until (if ever!) I go to X.

Can't recall how stable 9.1. is/was but 9.2.2. is [for me at least] very stable.

I'd stick to 9.1 if I were you, 9.2 seems a little more buggy.

This is especially true if your using an older machine - a G3 beige for example loses its ability to do USB card support under 9.2

Only reason I'd go to 9.2 is if your planning to go to X or are on a network with other X machines (and even then I'd hesitate).

I just upgraded to 9.2.2 from 9.1 on my "unsupported" 7600 using OS9 helper. Was this a bad move then?    

Appears to be fine so far apart from having to reinstall Cubase VST 5 which just wouldn't load, Logic Audio is rock solid though. Haven't had chance to give anything else a thorough going over yet.

Iain, if it works for you I wouldn't worry...  

Just a general thing we've found (I work for a refurbished Mac specialist so these kind of issues come up frequently) is that 9.2 seems to cause more problems on older machines.

You wouldn't belive how long that Beige issue took to work out over the phone...

I have a beige G3 minitower with a ZIF accelerator card running at 500MHz and set for a 66MHz system bus. It has an internal floppy drive, ZIP drive, CDROM drive and two hard drives one of which is SCSI. I also have an external hard drive, CDRW drive, and a scanner. All of which are SCSI. There's also an external 56k V.90 modem and two printers which are run on Apple/LocalTalk. I also occasionally connect my 1400 laptop via SCSI.

Most of the changes in 9.2 were made "beneath the hood"  for the purpose of petter performance and stability in Classic mode. For example, OS 9.2 offers more stable networking under Classic.

If you are not using X, then it's unlikely you'll have any good reason to move to 9.2.

I'm still running 9.1 on my beige G3 with 9.2.2 on my G4.

Fairly conclusive, enough for us never to put 9.2 on a Beige again anyway.  Admitedly we've never tried it on a tower, and I can't say we tested every model of the beige desktop (probably either 233 or 266 MHz versions).

Moral of the story as far as we're concerned is keep 9.2 for working with OSX and use 9.1 if you just want a 9 enviroment.  As Steve_J said, there aren't really any benefits of it apart from   the OSX related ones.

I installed 9.2.1 in my beige G3 tower last week and my two USB HP printers hooked to a hub in the base of my monitor that's connected to a 2-port USB card (took a breath) seem to work fine. My scanner, however, is a different story.

I'm running OS 9.2.2 on my beige G3 and it's working just fine. Don't have a USB card, don't plan on getting one.

Thats interesting snuffysbluff, never did try it on a tower. Could be that or maybe different OS versions - talking with one of our tech guys it may have been 9.2 straight that we had problems with - 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 are better.
