Question:

If I use the "Mail" program in OS X and get my email, then delete it, then go to my other Mac and start Netcape and click on mail in OS9.1 it downloads the same stuff, even though I thought I deleted it from the server in Mail in OSX!

Does anyone know why this happens?

Try Preferences > Internet > Email click POP.

It's probably IMAP now which leaves messages on the Server.

I figured it out. I had it set to POP.

In Mail->preferences->Edit->Advanced-> there's a checkbox to delete it off the server.

Hi Gary,

In Mail preferences, under your account, go to edit and then to advanced. There you can select how long you want to keep messages on the server and in what intervals you want them deleted.

I notice the same thing when I fire up my Wallstreet and check mail with OE on OS9.1. Messages that have already been read on my iMac with Jag were supposed to be removed from the server "Right Away" according to the prefs. However, the messages continue to appear when I open OE on the Wallstreet.

I chose "Right Away" this morning and it worked. I'll see if it sticks in the prefs.

*disclaimer* *not using OSX* but....Instead of "empty Trash" I do "Select all" in the trash window and Delete. It appears the server "recognizes" that command "faster" than "empty".

I have "Leave messages on server" and "Delete messages on server when they are deleted locally" checked.

Just reread the above and realized it made no sense....

I, too, have the same problem, in that I access my mail on two different machines, and oftentimes what I delete on the house machine (at least I thought I had deleted!) shows up on the office machine.

It's like the server didn't realize that I deleted the mail. So, I've taken to doing the select all (in the trash window) and delete instead of empty trash. I also don't quit the mail client right away, it seems to take ±5 minutes for the server to recognize the command. I blame it on Bernie no, really, I blame it on the "leave messages on server" but that is a necessary evil.

I've had a similar problem with @noos.fr, sometimes, and noticed it when I use their webmail service from the office.
When I trash stuff via the webmail, it seems to disappear for good. What remains on the server before I do this seems to be quite arbitrary -- I've no idea why most of it's gone, while one or two items remain.
I've just had a look at webmail for my .mac account.
That one behaves as it should.
