(OT) SF Chronicle Columnist Henry Norr Fired
« on: April 28, 2003, 10:11:00 PM »
This morning (Monday 4/28/03) there was a cryptic note on the front of the Chron's Technology and Business section informing readers that tech columnist Henry Norr was no longer working for the newspaper.

For those folks who do not read the Chronicle or its online version sfgate.com, Henry covered tech issues and wrote a regular column for Macintosh users.  His writing has always been informative and with a much-needed touch of good humor, something that is often lacking in newspaper and technology writing.

There are at least two rumors floating around regarding why Henry got the axe.  The unofficial-official reason is that Henry cut work one day last month, participated in an anti-war demonstration and was arrested, and he was fired because he violated the newspaper's personnel policies by taking an unauthorized day-off.

The unofficial-unofficial reason is that he was fired for his apparently left-leaning political views.

As I said, these are both unsubstantiated rumors and The Chronicle has taken a "no comment" stance, but sources say that the paper claims that Henry falsified his time card, which lead to his dismissal.

It will probably be awhile before the dust settles and the reason(s) for his firing become clearer.  There may also be other information that is available but which I didn't find during my quick reading of a few websites.  What I have read so-far qualifies as Internet Speculation in my book.  For those interested in finding out more about this, a search of "Henry Norr" via Google will turn up  a number of hits, including an audio interview with Henry (which I have not had the time to listen to...).

Whether the reason for his firing is bad judgment on Henry's part or because of Henry's political views (or a combination of the two), I am going to miss his writing and his support of Macintosh users.  I hope that he finds another venue for his work and continues his fine reporting on technology and Mac issues.

Another view on this subject...

http://blogs.salon.com/0000014/2003/04/25.html

And an article from The Examiner...

http://www.examiner.com/news/default.jsp?s...ry=n.norr.0410w

What?  Not one response to this post, or at least a criticism that this subject might have a vague political odor to it?  Didn't the Bay Area TSers ever read Henry's columns?  You gotta read  something since the Berkeley Barb folded...!

Well Mayo... I've never read the guy's stuff... but when I first read this post, I kept the "lock" on the fingers/lips... whatever, because I'll admit my first thought was... "It wouldn't be the first time they've turfed someone for the monumental sin of leaning to the left!"

Now I'll shut up again!

Interesting, Mayo.

I've been a fan of Norr from the distant (Mac) past, when he wrote for lots of places-and-things 'round here: MacUser, Computer Chronicles. MacWeek (when it  really was  something to enjoy) etc. etc. I always felt that Norr and the late Don Crabb were the "authorities" to pay attention to.

What I find curious is that I think I might have objected (to the degree of just not following him) had I ever detected any political (or any irrelevant) observations woven into his throughly interesting and informative Mac columns. I just don't think such things ever crossed his keyboard in all the years I read him.

I hope he lands on his feet, as I expect he will, since he is one smart Mac analyst/writer. I'll withhold comment on his politics, as he seemed to have done.

My impression is that Norr is not accused of injecting politics into his writing, but that he was fired for his political activities outside of work, which is why his firing is drawing so much attention in some quarters.

At first I thought you meant the  actor Roger Moore (you know...he replaced sean Connery as James B...never mind, it's late) then I realized that you meant the  other Roger Moore.  Ha Ha!

I really only brought up the political part in my second post to see if anyone was reading this, or cared.  Now I know.  I haven't taken the time to pursue any of the scuttlebutt.

I'm not that knowledged in your laws in the US, but isn't there a law that says you are allowed to hold any view you like? Free speech and all that?

OK, if he cuts his job one day, I guess that's a good reason for dismissal or if he got arrested.... but to fire someone for his political views, that's even worse than in many socialistic countries!

I hope this guy takes a fight if the reasons is somewhat blurry.

Petra,

That is somewhat of a common misconception.

The First Ammendment of the U.S Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

You will notice that this prohibition only applies to the Congress.  For reasons more complicated than is necessary to discuss here,  these prohibitions have generally been applied to the state and local governmets as well through interpretation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Ammendment.

This does not prohibit individual employers rights to regulate what their employees say or do.  There are of course other laws that regulate this area, but it is not simply a cut and dried "freedom of speech issue".

In other words you can say "ALMOST" anything you want and not be prosecuted by law, but you may just have other consequences for what you say... such as losing your job.

This is the responsibility that comes with the right.... most people forget this.

Disclaimer... This is to be taken generally,  I know absolutely nothing about henry Norr, his politics or his current situation.

Steve

Petra, things are sooooo much more complicated than it seems in The Land of the Free, et al. Just take a look at U.S. history.  If you do, you will know more than 98% of Americans, because we don't know squat about our own history (and even less about the world outside our borders).

Here is a recent book that went perfectly with Operation Iraqi Freedom:  "War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning" by Chris Hedges.  It's not an easy read but it is a Must Read.  An excellent companion is "Democracy In America" written by Tocqueville in 1831, if memory serves me.  It is available to read online and it is an amazing explanation of democracy as practiced in America in the early 19th century as well as a remarkably accurate prophecy of what we have become at the dawn of the 21st century.

I guess I should be happy I live in Sweden... we might have high taxes, but we sure have more freedom in other ways.

Been reading this book by Michael Moore (saw someone mention him) and he sure is fun to read. I especially enjoyed the part about women vs men... hillarious!

Petra, if you get a chance to see "Bowling For Columbine," you should.  It's an amazing look at America's gun culture.
