How do you share iTunes4?
« on: May 01, 2003, 05:32:00 PM »
I'm beginning to see folks offering up their iTunes selections to each other.

How does this work?

Thomas, MacInTouch has posted a tutorial on iTunes sharing at http://www.macintouch.com/itunes_store.html#sharing. Perhaps some needed detail is there.

OK, so I've read both threads on this topic, but I still don't quite get it. Somebody please type to me like I'm a child.

Once I do get it, does this mean that friends can actually listen to my songs if I'm online? Will I know that they are doing this?
Can they download the files? Can I listen to different songs as this is happening?

Back to the instructions, I understand that I need to "Open up port: 3689 in your Router" and that
"192.168.1.1 or for DLink routers, 192.168.0.1 - from there, just cruise around until you find the applicable screen that lets you open ports. Usually the functions are relatively self-evident (or at least from my not-exactly-vast experiences with 3 different routers, it has been)".

Well, I use 192.168.1.1 to access the setup screen on my Linksys BEFW11S4 192.168.1.1  and I see this window, but the next step is not self-evident to this old brain.

What browser are you using?

You are missing the navigation tabs that should appear at the top of the screen.  I too have a linksys router and this happens to me with Safari.  I use Internet explorer to access my router's setup screen.

Can't answer for the linksys since we have a Dlink, but the idea is to map the port to the machine you're on in the Router.

To you questions:

Yes, up to 5 friends at the same time can listen to your iTunes songs while you're online (and have the sharing turned on).

No, you will not see who they are, but in the preferences you will see the amount of people listening in. I hope Apple will develop this part more so you can see who's who.

No, they cannot download your files, just listen to them. It's like a stream.

Yes, you can listen to whatever songs you want, or not listen at all. It only works if you have iTunes open, but you don't have to listen to it at the same time.

What you are seeing here is a cropped image, I use IE to access this page. In fact, that is virtually all I use IE for--Camino keeping me very happy these days.

But what about the navigation tabs? Would it help to see them, or can I be guided to the right set of options?

Thanks for the info. Am I correct that this kinder, more advanced approach is a Mac exclusive? Or am I able to share with the less fortunate?

I have found how to enable Port 3689, so now how does anybody else reach my music?

If anybody wants to try:

192.168.1.1 is what my system profiler lists as an IP.

daap://tomtunes

tomtunes is the shared named I put into iTunes Sharing preferences.

Love to know if this really works.

by the way, I think I have every Dylan song ever known, if that entices anybody

Thomas, you need to give us your ip-number to your Internet connection, the 192.168.1.1 is probably to your router, internally.

Now my iTunes is offline, but my ip-number is: 213.100.201.235

If you don't know what ip-number you have, you can use this link: http://whatismyip.com/

Just a note, those who has slow connections will get many rebuffers, which makes listening to music pretty uncomfortable because of all the break-ups.
