2009 / Operate older Mac remotely?
« on: May 09, 2009, 10:09:53 PM »
Thanks. I know a new machine is probably the easiest way out of this predicament but I like overcoming the seemingly impossible.   wallbash.gif

I forgot to mention in the prior post that she has actually been able to send email, just not receive them.

My memory of OS 9 is so vague I don't even remember where to start coaching her back to health. When I was still able to use HouseCall Doctor I could fumble my way thru a solution. Now it depends on recall of which I have become less capable with every passing year.   rolleyes.gif

2009 / Operate older Mac remotely?
« on: May 09, 2009, 04:57:28 PM »
Hi all,

Several years ago when I could still run MacOS 9 on my Mac I could use "House Call Doctor" (running on Classic) to remotely access my Mom's Mac (running OS 9) and fix some things for her. She is very naive about computers and I had set up a bunch of macros for her to simply send and receive email from us and my sister's family. It was one of my older Macs, a 6100AV, that has served her pretty well with a few exceptions. I was always able to fix them remotely. We are separated by 2000 miles and running over to fix it isn't an option. Also, she lives in a small town (some 700) in the middle of South Dakota and there are no other Mac users to call on for help. Yes, it is a backward community for sure. She called today and said she has been without her email for a week now and I don't even know where to begin.

Now days, I'm running OS 10.5 and I have been unable to find a way to remotely connect to her older Mac from mine. Am I barking up a barren tree or is there a way?

2008 / Emailing from Japan

Thank you. At least I know now it isn't just me.

That all makes sense and I now have a work around to go with.

2008 / Emailing from Japan
« on: August 03, 2008, 05:03:09 PM »
I have not had a problem before so don't exactly know what could be causing it now but I am having a problem with sending email from Japan. At first it was just Osaka and I would just ignore it and use Skype to call home but this week it happened in Nagoya when it never did before. I haven't changed anything in my email settings from then to now.

I am receiving email with no problem. When sending I have tried my Mac, Gmail and Comcast email accounts. All with no success.

Any suggestions? Of course I will have to wait until later this month to test out any ideas since it only happens from that direction.

I know what some of you may ask, did you have any success writing to anyone else. Well, I can't remember the last time I wrote anyone else an email from over there and whether it was at the same time I was having problems with our home. I may have to try that next time but I am pretty sure I was able to send to others when I had the problem with my wife's computer.

Is there a possibility that it is her computer settings and not mine? I use my own email accounts which she always receives otherwise so unless the hotels are adding some kind of data to the email that keeps my services from delivering it I am at a loss.

2007 / Foreign language garbled in Mail
« on: December 14, 2007, 04:22:18 PM »
Well, I may have just fixed my problem for the time being anyway.

I chose the message in question, went to the Message menu, selected Text Encoding and then Korean (Windows, DOS). Whola, the correct text.

Now, I don't know if that will hold or if there is a way to keep that fixed that way or not, but at least I know a work around.

Have you checked in Fontbook to make sure any/all Korean fonts are enabled? dntknw.gif Don't suppose anything is still running Tiger...if so, you might want to compare the installed/enabled languages. You can check that Korean is even installed with the "International" Pref Panel. In the Language" tab, mouse over the list and the text tool tip will report the names of any that are using non-roman characters. 'Korean' seems to be just two characters in my standard install.

Hi Xairbusdrover. I opened up Font Book and the Korean fonts are there but how do you know they are enabled?

I did not have the Korean language set up in the International Pref Panel on my computer, but it was set up on my wife's since she is the only one that uses it, and since the email came to both of our accounts and appeared the same on both 'puters I don't think that was the problem. Besides, I never had the International Korean settings turned on for my old Powerbook either and the Korean text appeared correctly there.

Now to complicate things further, I just created an email on my wife's computer using Korean and mailed it to me. It came in correctly.

I would be concerned about the computer in Korea but I just delivered them a brand new Macbook 2 weeks ago and they are using it to write us. BTW, they are absolutely LOVING the Mac. We have used iChat about 30 times in that 2 weeks.

I just upgraded all my machines in the house. Got a Macbook and Macbook Pro with Leopard installed. My wife is Korean and we often get email from Korea. In Tiger it always came in correctly. Today we received email that was total garbage. Just a bunch of unintelligible characters.

Anyone know why?

Also, is there any way to make the garbled email correct after the fact or do they just have to send the email over again?

Thanks in advance.

2007 / Mail Account Password Problem
« on: November 24, 2007, 01:49:40 PM »
I am getting constant requests for me to enter my passwords for various accounts in my Mail program. I will go into Keychain Access and delete the passwords, then reenter them in the Mail program but alas after several hours the problem returns. Also, have noticed that when I return to the Mail Accounts page the password block is empty (not even reflecting the standard 'dots').

2006 / Virus in Entourage?
« on: July 03, 2006, 03:14:35 PM »
I ran ClamXav recently and found the file HTML.Phishing.Bank-50 in the Entourage Database. Is it harmful? How do I get rid of it?

From my understanding, Microsoft keeps all mail in one file (the database) and it is impossible to rid yourself of one file without destroying all your mail.

2004 / Third party RAM
« on: February 12, 2004, 02:51:40 PM »
Thank you all for your friendly advice. I finally decided to go to my local Mac store in Portland (sales tax free) and with my MUG discount got 2-512mb Viking chips for $280. I was leary of dealing with mail order again after being so frustrated for the first 3 weeks of ownership and not one day without a kernel panic. I decided the little extra money I spent was worth being able to pop it in right in the store and see if it did the trick. I'm in my 4th day of useage and feel I can comfortably say I'm in the clear. It is purring along on all cylinders.

I don't have any kernel panics, nor do I experience the wake-up problem that led me down this long path to begin with.

I would like to know one thing though regarding the wake up of a Powerbook. When the cover is closed for the night and reawaken in the morning, the desktop picture pops into view, followed by a flicker, then blue screen and quickly followed by the desktop picture reappearing again. It all happens very fast (maybe 2-3 secs) and is not something I am overly concerned with, but was just wondering if others see the same behaviour.

2004 / Third party RAM

You're right Kelly. How stupid of me. I now realize that you can remove items in the right column that you don't want to clone back. Cloning the Documents and Users folders are no brainers, but the big question is "Do I dare mess with the library folders (both in the System and Users folders)? Isn' that where all the prefs, etc. are lying in wait?

2004 / Third party RAM
« on: February 07, 2004, 06:37:01 PM »
It was actually a replacement for some "no Name" memory MacMall had put in with their free 512mb upgrade to 1gb. Since I was returning that memory and getting it replaced free of charge it came down to which one to pick, not price, so I chose Kingston. I received it this morning and put it in. Things ran fine for several hours and then I was unable to reboot again. I could only reboot into Safe Mode. I tried several repairs to the hard drive and system but after 2 hours of frustration I decided to start from scratch. Luckily I had backed up late last night.

I used the external hard drive to boot up the computer, erased the Powerbook hard drive completely and am doing a Panther install from scratch. The reason I had to erase it is because on attempting to do an "archive and install" it froze up solid. When I rebooted on the external I saw a "previous system" on the Powerbook but nothing was begun on installing the new "System." I figured I messed it up beyond repair. The second attempt was an "erase and install" which also froze up. Thus the decision to use Disk Utility and erase the volume completely. With any luck this fresh install will be OK.

Now my question to you: I want to use this cleanly installed OS X after the software updates. How can I set up Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything back to the Powerbook except the newly installed X?

Quickly, I have MacMall on the other line.

I would like to know what you guys think the best third party RAM is for the Mac. Who does Apple use to make their RAM?

2004 / Startup Verbage
« on: February 04, 2004, 10:21:56 AM »
I started up in Safe Boot last night and let it sleep all night. Everything was OK this morning which now brings be to another question, what is really happening when booting into this Safe mode?

Unlike the MacOS 9 days I don't see the Extensions that it is turning off, nor can I see a way to trouble shoot which one may be causing my problem. All the third party programs (Spell Catcher, QuicKeys and You Control) I have added are still available when in this safe mode even though I thought all startups were so suppose to be disabled.

I read this article about Safe Mode (http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/02-2003/02-25.ws) and suspect one of the kernel extensions that has been deactivated may be my problem. If one of them is the cause of my startup problem then how do I fix it? Or replace it? Or disactivate it alone?
