What "folder" are you talking about? That is definitely not a normal "Applications" folder/directory.

Is it the "/Mail 10-39-45-061" I asked about?

I have no idea what kind of folder/directory it is since it has files that should be in Applications, ~/Library/Preferences, ~/Library/Mail, etc. dntknw.gif

How about this, open a Finder window with the Side Bar enabled. Press command-3. Select Applications. Click, hold and drag the lower right-hand corner to make the window as tall as possible but narrow enough to just show the list of applications in the first column. Scroll up to the very top of the window/list. Press command-shift-4. Press the space bar. Move the cursor over the Finder window to highlight it. Single click the mouse button to capture the highlighted area.

If the entire list will not fit in the tall, narrow window, scroll down enough to have the last item in the previous image be the first item in the next. Continue until you have the entire list of items in your Applications folder captured in images.

If the image(s) are .png, open them in Preview. Use Save As... and select JPEG as the format. Using the Full Editor upload the image(s) in a new post. Use the "Attachments Manage Current Attachments (NUMBERofIMAGES)" popup list to select each image, one at a time, to insert in the message.

Thanks!

Those listed folder contents are what you'd find in the Mail folder under the User/Library/Mail path.

According to most of the Apple support threads the fix for most people is to eliminate ALL copies of Mail, reinstall the original 4.2 that comes with the Snow Leopard disc, then run the combo update, then the security update.  I believe it is the security update that changes the Mail from 4.5 to 4.6, not the combo update.

You stated you don't have a disc for 10.6, so do you have any Mail apps on your backup drives that you could copy over?

Here are a bunch of links to Apple threads discussing the problem and some finding relief. You are not alone.

Hey Krissel,

I have a copy of Mail 4.5 on a backup disc. I copied it to my desktop and it is there waiting for the next move.

I will give it a try these suggestions you gave me from the links you provided. I'm glad to know I am not the only one having this problem.

As soon as I get some time to work on this again I will let you know the result.

Thanks for your help

Guys,

I am totally frustrated. I tried your suggestions several different ways with no luck.

Would updating to Mountain Lion bring Mail back to use?

MeThinks that Mail v4.5 is the correct version for 10.6.8

Are you sure you're running 10.6.8

Where did you get the idea that Mail should be v4.6 ?

(a question for Tacit - what is the correct version of Mail in 10.6.8?)

Just as an FYI, I've been using 10.6.8 for some time. A quick "Get Info" on my Mail app does indeed show it to be version 4.6.
You stated that the updates came from Apple. Was it via Software Update? Not that I could shed any light on it, was just curious.

Hey Krissel,

Don't put it on your desktop. Put it directly into the Applications folder.

It sounds like something is going wrong because Mail is in a place besides your Applications folder. It is very important to make sure that it is nowhere on your hard drive except the Applications folder--not in its own folder, not on the desktop, not anywhere else.

I wonder if part of what's going wrong is that you are somehow making an ALIAS of it in the Applications folder, instead of actually putting it into the Applications folder.

Take Mail 4.5, put it in your Applications folder, then take a snapshot of your screen so we can see what's happening.

Sluggo -

Yes, the update came via Software Update.

Tacit -

Mail was only put on the desktop to keep it from being lost. I wanted to make sure that Mail was ready to be put into the Applications folder when I started the next attempt to solve the problem.

Gentlemen (Krissel and Xairbusdriver as well), I really appreciate all the time you have given me in trying to solve this glitch. Mail is firmly placed in the Applications folder where it should be and after re-downloading the Combo update and following the instructions I still get "This version of Mail will not work with this version of Mac OS".

Would updating to Moutain Lion solve this issue?
