10.4.9 Update
« Reply #15 on: March 14, 2007, 06:54:37 AM »
One small 10.4.9 nit noted with my 2’ Intel iMac-

I am virtually certain I did not have the problem with 10.4.8, so, FWIW, I attribute it 10.4.9:

The “Hot Corner” (System Preferences/Desktop & Screen Saver> Screen Saver pane) no longer worked.

I then trashed the com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine.plist, restarted, and all is again right with the world. cheer.gif

Strangely, at least to me, the above plist has not reappeared. Thinking.gif

Did anybody else notice that their computers internal speakers are much loader after the update?

Now that you mention it, there is a very noticeable increase in volume on my Intel iMac.  Works for me.
Same increase while using Airport Express to speakers in another room.

I noticed the speaker volume too,
and perhaps a tiny bit of speed.

Apparently, many users were having problems as a result of inadvertently hitting the Eject key.

Now, instead of a quick tap to eject one’s optical media, device, or volume, the Eject key must be held down for a half second or so. rolleyes.gif

I think I can live with that. Though I won't be surprised if some third party develops a hack to set the Eject key response time back to where it was. dntknw.gif

Harv, about a minute ago I was getting ready to post that since the update my eject key wasn't working correctly. Then I noticed it worked if I held it down for a second. Thanks for the explanation on that one. thumbup.gif

So far so good on two Macs.  20" Intel iMac and Gigabit Ethernet Mac.

Used the combo updater after making bootable backups of the OS partition on a portable firewire drive.

Now, to debate if I want to do the update on the other 3 running Macs in the house.
27" 2.8 GHz Intel I7 iMac, 8 GB RAM, 2 TB HD, 2x 2TB OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro external HD, EyeTV 250 Plus, 23" Acer HD monitor, OS 10.6.7

Interesting eject key change,,,,,,,when I put my Macs to sleep for the night, I hit the command, option, and eject keys.   I did that last night, went into the kitchen, but noticed one was still on.  Came back in and repeated the process, but did notice that I had to hold the key down for a longer time.  So, yes, this did change my 10.4.8 Mac also.
I am wondering if I should wait a little bit before I install it onto my husband's new MacTel?

If Apple were to follow conventional naming techniques and release an update after 10.4.9, it would be 10.4.10, then 10.4.11, and so on. You see this often in Linux apps, which are updated so frequently you'll simetimes find version numbers like "2.6.131".

Updating from 10.4.anything to 10.4.9 can be done in one swoop; it's not necessary to update to 10.4.8 first.

I've also noticed that 10.4.9 puts a delay in the Eject key, which is good because I accidentally hit the Eject key often when I reach for F12 (Dashboard) or F11 (Expose) on my MacBook keyboard... smile.gif

I will go ahead with my husband's Mac then.

My oldest Mac has 10.3.9 on it, how would be the best way to upgrade that one to 10.4.9?  I do have a Tiger disk, I bought it for one of our kids.  Its in Boston, but they could send it to me if I needed it.
Thank you,
Jane

Jane, you will need a Tiger disk - since 10.4 wasn't a free update. Once you've installed that, you can use the Combo update for 10.4.9 to make the leap. smile.gif

Oh, That is good, they will be here with the grandkids in a few weeks, so I will remind them to bring the Tiger disk.
Thanks,
Jane

Just used software update and everything went well. I Repair Permissions before and after, and unconnected any peripherals.

After updating my G4 iMac to 10.4.9, I experienced my first kernal panic ever with Tiger. It occurred when I double-clicked on a dmg file to mount it.

I started up with single user boot (Command-S) and ran AppleJack. On rebooting, I have had no more kernal panics. However, I have had recurrent problems mounting dmg files. Work-around suggested on MacFixit worked: did Safe Boot and then rebooted. Now able to mount dmg files without any problems. Safe Boot automatically deletes the following files:
     /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    /System/Library/com.apple.kernelcaches
which seems to solve the problem in mounting disk images.
